Uganda warns Congo on rebel group

KAMPALA, May 1, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Uganda has again warned the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) over the activities of a Ugandan rebel group hiding in Garamba National Park, eastern DRC, state-owned New Vision reported on Monday.

The government also challenged the UN Observer Mission in the Congo, MONUC, to contain Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) who have been fighting it for the last 20 years in a rebellion that has left tens of thousands of people dead in northern Uganda.

Reports concerning Ugandan incursions into DRC credible

The UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) is following up on reports of clashes between the Congolese national army and suspected elements of the armed group known as the Ugandan People's Defence Force, or UPDF, in the area south of Aba in the Ituri District.

As a precautionary measure, MONUC has reinforced its military presence in Aba, with the deployment of one platoon of peacekeepers and two armoured vehicles.

Uganda-Sudan: Repatriation of refugees to start next week

Kampala, 28 Apr 2006 (IRIN) - The voluntary repatriation of southern Sudanese refugees who have lived in neighbouring Uganda for decades will begin next week, thanks to better security in the region, the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said on Thursday.

DR Congo protests against Ugandan incursion into territory

KINSHASA, Apr 27, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Thursday lodged a protest against the Ugandan government after Ugandan troops intruded into its territory from southern Sudan Wednesday night.
According to a statement issued by DRC Foreign Ministry Thursday night, about a company of Ugandan soldiers, riding in two vehicles armed with cannons, crossed into the remote northeast DRC region of Adau, 17 km from the border with Sudan.

The statement said the Ugandan soldiers, who claimed to be hunting down the Ugandan Lord's Resistance Army (LRA)

Ugandan army builds buffer zone in volatile northeast

KAMPALA, Apr 28, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The Uganda People's Defense Force (UPDF) is building a buffer zone between the northeastern Karamoja region and its neighbors to block armed warriors from rustling cattle.

The UPDF's Chief of Land Forces Maj. Gen. Katumba Wamala was quoted by state-owned New Vision daily as saying on Friday this is one of the army's security measures as it resettles internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Teso, eastern Uganda.

Kinshasa, 28 Apr 2006 (IRIN) - The Democratic Republic of Congo has protested to Uganda against its army's incursion into northeastern Congo in the so-called pursuit of Ugandan rebels, the Congolese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday.

"A note of protest has been handed to the Embassy of Uganda in Kinshasa," the ministry said in a communiqué.

The ministry said the note condemned what it said was fighting between Ugandan and Congolese troops on Wednesday

DRC: Kinshasa warns Uganda against military incursions

KINSHASA, April 28, 2006 (AFP) - The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) warned Uganda against violating its borders on Friday, after the Congolese army reported that Ugandan soldiers had entered the DRC to look for rebel forces from the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA).
The Congolese army report said that armed men in Ugandan military uniform arrived at Aba in northeastern DRC on Wednesday, chasing LRA rebels who were on the run after an attack in neighbouring Sudan.

Uganda: Cholera hits Agoro IDP camp

THE cholera epidemic in southern Sudan has spread to Agoro internally displaced people's (IDP) camp in Kitgum district where 27 cases were reported recently, the LC5 chairman has said.

Chris Ocowun reports that Nahaman Ojwee said the epidemic spread to the area through interactions at Agoro camp market.

The market attracts business people from Gulu, Kitgum, Pader and southern Sudan every Wednesday, he said.

Ojwee said they suspect the epidemic to have spread from the towns of Ikotos and Torit which border Kitgum.

UN probes reports Uganda troops clashed in Congo

KINSHASA, April 27 (Reuters) - U.N. peacekeepers in Congo are investigating reports that Ugandan soldiers crossed into Congo in pursuit of rebels and clashed with Congolese troops, the world body said on Thursday.

Uganda: Army building buffer zone in Karamoja

THE army is building a buffer zone between Karamoja and its neighbours to block the warriors from rustling cattle.

This is one of the army's security measures as it resettles internally displaced persons in Teso, the Land Forces chief, Maj. Gen. Katumba Wamala told a consultative meeting called by the Prime Minister, Prof. Apolo Nsibambi.

Uganda: Drought looming - minister warns

The country is bound to face another severe drought, state minister for water Maria Mutagmba told parliament yesterday, write Mariam Nalunkuuma and Apollo Mubiru.

Mutagamba said reports from the meterological department indicate that, "the rains we are experiencing now are going to be normal or below normal. That means that very soon, we shall experience another severe drought."
