Thousands take part in peace marches in north Uganda

KAMPALA, Dec 31 (AFP) - Thousands of people took part in peace marches in northern Uganda on Wednesday to demand the end of a 17-year rebel war in the region, officials said.
"About four thousand people participated in the demonstration in Gulu town that ended with a peace prayer," Roman Catholic priest Carlos Rodriguez told AFP by telephone from Gulu.

He said more people had taken part in a another march organised by religions leaders in the town of Kigum, northeast of Gulu.

This report provides an update of activities carried out under the Multi-Country Demobilization and Reintegration Program (MDRP) since the time of the previous quarterly progress report (July to September 2003). Ugandan army says 300 rescued from LRA rebels in December

Kampala (dpa) - Government forces in December rescued 318 people, mainly children, who had been abducted by guerillas fighting in northern Uganda, an army spokesman said Tuesday.
The army is transferring dozens of malnourished and wounded children whom it had rescued from the Lords Resistance Army (LRA), to trauma treatment centres, the spokesman Chris Magezi said in a telephone interview from Lira, 270 kilometres north of Kampala.

The Federal Foreign Office supported more than 300 humanitarian aid projects all over the world in 2003

The Federal Foreign Office supported 307 projects for humanitarian aid, humanitarian mine clearance as well as disaster prevention all over the world in 2003 to the tune of EUR 71.5 million.
Some 237 projects totalling EUR 52.5 million received support from the humanitarian aid budget. This funding was used to look after victims of natural disasters or armed conflicts and provide life-saving commodities such as clean drinking water, food and medication. RDC: La MONUC rapatrie des ex-combattants ougandais et rwandais cantonnés à Kitona

La MONUC a commencé depuis samedi 13 décembre dernier le rapatriement d'ex-combattants rwandais et ougandais cantonnés à Kitona, à l'Ouest de la RDC. Au total cinq cent quatre-vingt-neuf personnes étaient concernées par l'opération DDRRR (désarmement, démobilisation, rapatriement, réinstallation et réinsertion)

Samedi 13 décembre, dans la journée une petite pluie s'abat sur la base militaire de Kitona, la deuxième en importance en RDC, après Kamina. La localité est située à l'extrême ouest du pays, à quelques centaines de mètres de l'océan Atlantique.

Church leaders call for renewed efforts for dialogue in the Ugandan war

KAMPALA, Dec 25 (AFP) - Christian leaders in Uganda used Christmas to renew calls to parties involved in a civil war raging in the north of the country to embrace dialogue as the solution to the 17-year old conflict.

RDC-Ouganda : La MONUC voit une ''avancée'' dans le rapatriement des rebelles ougandais

KAMPALA, le 22 décembre (IRIN) - Les responsables de la mission des Nations Unies en République démocratique du Congo (RDC) ont salué le récent rapatriement d'anciens rebelles ougandais opérant en RDC. Ils ont qualifié cet événement "d'avancée décisive pour la normalisation des relations entre l'Ouganda et le Congo". La MONUC a encore estimé que cette importante étape devrait inciter d'autres rebelles ougandais encore présents en RDC à quitter le territoire.

DRC-Uganda: MONUC hails return of Ugandan rebels as a "breakthrough"

KAMPALA, 22 December (IRIN) - UN officials have hailed the recent repatriation of former Ugandan rebels operating in neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) as a "breakthrough in the normalisation of relations between Uganda and Congo", adding that it would be useful in convincing other Ugandan rebels still at large in eastern DRC to return.

Twenty-five die in cattle-rustling raid in east Uganda

KAMPALA, Dec 19 (AFP) - At least 25 people were killed this week in eastern Uganda when heavily armed Karamojong tribal warriors raided neighbouring communities to steal cattle, a military spokesman said on Friday.
The victims of the raid on Wednesday included 14 villagers and 11 warriors killed by government troops, according army spokesman Lieutenant David Kazoola.

"We have confirmed reports that 14 civilians were killed in Nadunget in Masheniko county of Moroto district when a joint force of the Bokora and the Pians attacked the Matheniko,"

Great Lakes: Conference in Burundi calls for end to marginalisation of Pygmies

BUJUMBURA, Dec 18 (AFP) - Around 50 delegates gathered in Burundi Thursday for the final day of a conference calling for an end to the marginalisation of Pygmies in Africa's Great Lakes region.
The conference, which opened Tuesday, has gathered representatives from the Pygmy communities in Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Uganda.

"We are here to see which strategies we should adopt to end the marginalisation of our respective societies, above all, in the field of education," Charles Uwiragiye, a member of the delegation from Rwanda, told AFP.

Uganda: New amnesty law to exclude top LRA leaders

NAIROBI, 16 December (IRIN) - The Ugandan government has announced plans to amend its four-year-old amnesty law to exclude the top leadership of the rebel Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). The current law expires on 17 January.
The Amnesty Act, which became law in January 2000, currently offers a blanket immunity and resettlement packages to all rebels who surrender their arms.

Shaban Bantariza, Uganda army spokesman told IRIN on Tuesday the law - which is renewed every six months - would this time be amended in parliament to exclude LRA leader Joseph Kony and his senior commanders.
