REPORT SUMMARY
This Working Paper documents the policies and procedures that affect asylum seekers and refugees living in Kampala -- the political and economic capital of Uganda -- by examining two key phenomena that draw them to an urban centre: first, achieving refugee status and, second, seeking resettlement to third countries. These concerns coincide with the three issues most often brought to the attention of the Refugee Law Project's Legal Aid Clinic by its clients: humanitarian assistance, refugee status determination and resettlement. Uganda: Focusing on older refugees

Forced Migration Review No. 14 - Older displaced people: at the back of the queue? (Extract)
by Linnie Kesselly
The continent of Africa - and the country of Uganda in particular with its large number of people affected by HIV/AIDS - presents a particular case when it comes to the role of older people within their communities. In Africa, it is frequently older people who are left to nurse their own dying children and then to take care of their orphaned grandchildren.

In Uganda, the total number of older refugees is 3,536, out of which 1,728 are female; they make up 1.9% of

KAMPALA, July 28 (AFP) - Rebels from the notoriously brutal Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) clashed Sunday with Ugandan army soldiers near the northern town of Gulu, a military spokesman said.

He said the LRA fighters had raided Laliya and Kadedo-Opong suburbs of Gulu, near the region's main army barracks, and were looting shops when the army confronted them.

Report on the nutrition situation of refugees and displaced populations - Issue No. 38

Eritrea The situation in Eritrea is precarious as a result of the continuing effect of an ongoing drought that is threatening food security at the country level. The country is also still suffering the effects of the war with Ethiopia and much work needs to be done to reintegrate fighters and rehabilitate much of the land and infrastructure in war affected areas. This has left a great deal of people acutely vulnerable and suffering from chronic food insecurity. It is concerning to note that humanitarian activities remains acutely under funded.
