Le HCR au Burundi assiste sous diverses formes et veille également à la protection de quelque 12 774 réfugiés urbains, dont 99 % sont originaires de la République Démocratique du Congo (RDC).

The impact of environmental degradation on refugee-host relations: A case study from Tanzania

Introduction

While the majority of literature in the field of refugee studies centres on refugees specifically, recent years have seen an increasing amount of research that looks beyond the refugee communities to the other groups and individuals also affected by refugee emergencies. In particular, these studies look at how the host communities -the communities living in the areas where refugees eventually settle, either formally or informally - are impacted by a rapid and often unexpected influx of refugees.

Great Lakes: Tanzania vows to close refugee camps by mid-2008

DAR ES SALAAM, Dec 27, 2007 (AFP) - Tanzania said it would close camps housing more than 200,00 refugees displaced by war in Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo by June 2008.

"In the last two years, the government managed to close six out of 11 camps, the goal is to close the rest by June next year," Home Affairs Minister Joseph Mungai said at a press conference in Dar Es Salaam.

He said the remaining camps run by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in western Tanzania were home to 110,643 refugees from Burundi and 99,799 from the DRC.

The 1996 UN report "The Impact of Armed Conflict on Children", widely known as the Machel study, for the first time brought the issues faced by children in armed conflict to international attention. Ten years later, a strategic review has now been convened to assess progress and look forward to identify key challenges and priorities for the future of the Children and Armed Conflict Agenda. The resulting report is to be presented to the General Assembly in October 2007, with the publication of more detailed analysis and findings to follow over the next year.

This is the fourth periodic report submitted by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania to the Human Rights Committee, in conformity with article 40 (1) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The report complements the previous reports submitted up to 1998 and it has been prepared in conformity with both guidelines and general recommendations issued by the Committee in 1998 (CCPR/A/53/40/1998).

DR Congo: Weekly repatriation update No. 21, 8 - 15 Dec 2007

SOUTH KIVU - The last 2007 return convoy of Congolese refugees from Tanzania camps to South Kivu arrived on 14 December 2007 at Baraka Port. MV Mwongozo, which was docking for the 109th times in the frame of this operation, brought home 261 people. Since January 2007, 24,750 Congolese have returned home. The voluntary repatriation of DRC refugees in Tanzania started in October 2005. To date 47,990 Congolese have been assisted to return home. This year 585 other Congolese came back to South Kivu among them 357 from Burundi and 228 from Mozambique.
