Summary and implications

National food security conditions remain favorable. Prices have decreased to average levels from the high prices of the last season, enabling access to food by poor market-dependent households. [This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]

DAR ES SALAAM, 27 December (IRIN) - Some 650 flood-affected Tanzanians are in need of urgent aid, officials said on Wednesday.

The victims have been cut off from the rest of the country after floods destroyed bridges on roads connecting their communities in the central region of Shinyanga.

"They need food, medicine, blankets and other relief supplies," Shing'wela Limbakise, the executive director of Kishapu district in the region, told IRIN. "You can only reach these people by helicopter."

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Aid and UN leadership needed in return areas

The reintegration of Congolese refugees in South Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) will not work unless greater investments in basic services, like education, health care and food security, are made soon. With increasing returns likely, due to political progress in the country or the pressure expected from both the Congolese and Tanzanian governments, there is a serious risk that the current capacity to support returning refugees will be overwhelmed and tensions will rise sharply. National authorities should start showing
