30 Jan: Defence lawyers at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha, Tanzania, suspend a three-day strike after receiving assurances from the tribunal's registry that some of their demands would be met and "serious" negotiations would begin. KEY ISSUES

- A key DFID objective at this stage is to provide capacity for the UN to become fully operational. Aceh is assessed to be a particularly urgent need in this respect. Ms Wahlstrom, UN Special Coordinator for the crisis, has called for military support to provide infrastructure necessary for UN teams to operate.

DFID RESPONSES TO DATE:

- We have dispatched to Denmark, vehicles, electrical lighting, generators and water purification units from the DFID stockpile, to be consolidated with equipment from other donor nations before shipment to support the UN Field Office in Banda Aceh.

- DFID approves funding of £400,000 to Christian Aid for their response in India 30 December.

- DFID approves funding of £2,000,000 to the International Federation of the Red Cross 30 December.

- The US is dispatching a Marine expeditionary unit, the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, and the Maritime pre-position squadron from Guam to the area to help with relief efforts. NOAA and the Indian Ocean Tsunami

NOAA scientists at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii went to work within minutes of getting a seismic signal that an earthquake occurred off the west coast of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. NOAA issued a bulletin indicating no threat of a tsunami to Hawaii, the West Coast of North America or to other coasts in the Pacific Basin-the area served by the existing tsunami warning system established by the Pacific rim countries and operated by NOAA in Hawaii.

A magnitude 9.0 earthquake on December 26, off the west coast of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, triggered massive tsunamis that affected several countries throughout South and Southeast Asia, as well as Somalia, Tanzania, and Kenya in East Africa.

WFP gets donation for feeding refugees in Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM, Dec 23, 2004 (Xinhua via COMTEX) - The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) on Thursday received six million US dollars urgently-required funds to assist refugees now living in western Tanzania.

The money came from a British government donation in the amount of 3 million pounds or 6 billion Tanzanian shillings (6 million US dollars).

"The contribution from the United Kingdom comes at a critical time allowing us to purchase food desperately needed in the region, " said Patrick Buckley, the WFP representative and country director, in his statement.
