The Federal Foreign Office supported more than 300 humanitarian aid projects all over the world in 2003

The Federal Foreign Office supported 307 projects for humanitarian aid, humanitarian mine clearance as well as disaster prevention all over the world in 2003 to the tune of EUR 71.5 million.
Some 237 projects totalling EUR 52.5 million received support from the humanitarian aid budget. This funding was used to look after victims of natural disasters or armed conflicts and provide life-saving commodities such as clean drinking water, food and medication. Tanzania: Health officials concerned about water shortages in Dar es Salaam

DAR ES SALAAM, 22 December (IRIN) - Tanzanian government health officials on Monday expressed growing concern about the impact water shortages were having on people's health in the nation's commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.
The lack of water is hampering health care providers' efforts to maintain normal services and has already led to an increase in the number of cases of cholera, health ministry officials told IRIN.

FEWS Tanzania Food Security Report 22 Dec 2003 - Drought relief needs only partly met


Summary
The vuli rains have performed poorly in several northern locations, raising concerns about poor crop performance and a prolonged period of food shortages without outside help.

Drought relief interventions have remained inadequate. The government has only released 52 percent of the maize planned for subsidized sale to food insecure households. Tanzania has received donor contributions for only 60 percent of the food aid needed for food for farming activities and only 30 percent of seed aid requirements. No fertilizer aid has been received.

Repatriation of Burundi refugees from Tanzanian camps picks up: UN

DAR ES SALAAM, Dec 12 (AFP) - The repatriation of Burundian refugees to their homes from camps in western Tanzania is picking up as the central African country shows signs of peace, a UN refugee agency official said on Friday.
"The number of refugees returning home has not gone up significantly, but it is rising steadily, indicating that many refugees are now showing interest to go home," UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokeswoman Ivana Unluova told AFP by telephone.

USAID and Foods Resource Bank expand alliance to reduce hunger

WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced an $800,000 grant to expand a public-private alliance with Foods Resource Bank (FRB) to address hunger through unique agricultural development programs in the developing world.
