ICRC to open country office in Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM, Jan 1, 2002 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Tanzania and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has signed an agreement for the establishment of an ICRC office in the country.
Official sources said here Tuesday that the agreement will facilitate the committee's work by regulating matters for its function as per the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and the 1977 additional protocols.

"This is a good omen for better thing to come," Tanzanian Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Jakaya Kikwete was quoted as saying during the signing ceremony.

Small grants to support human rights in 21 countries

UNDP and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights have launched a new phase of a joint project to provide small grants for community human rights initiatives in 21 countries.
The Assisting Communities Together (ACT) project offers grants up to US$5,000 to community organizations and individuals. The project funds activities that require little support but can nonetheless have a significant impact at the local level.

Eastern Africa: Refugee numbers down in Uganda, Sudan

NAIROBI, 21 December (IRIN) - Uganda, Sudan and Tanzania were among the countries that registered "an important decrease in the refugee population" between January and end September this year, the UN refugee agency reported on Wednesday.
The refugee population was down by 59,000 in Uganda, by 31,000 in Sudan and 28,000 in Tanzania at the end of September compared to 1 January, according to the results of the latest provisional quarterly study from the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Tanzania: Rural radio to help tackle food security

NAIROBI, 19 December (IRIN) - The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has teamed up with a global network of community radio stations, including Olkonerei FM in Tanzania, in an effort to improve rural food security and health, the UN agency stated in a press release on Tuesday.

Refugee population falls by four percent to five million people in 87 countries this year

Refugees returning from Kosovo to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
GENEVA, Dec. 19 (UNHCR) -- The refugee population in 87 asylum countries decreased by around four percent to five million people during the first nine months of the year, with the biggest drop registered by the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

The provisional quarterly study released Wednesday by UNHCR said the agency helped the voluntary repatriation of 110,000 refugees and the resettlement of 23,600 others during the January to September period. Some 78,000 persons applied for refugee status.

Latest information indicates a slightly larger global cereal output in 2001, of 1 870 million tonnes (including rice in milled terms). However, even at this level, production would still be less than the anticipated utilization requirements in 2001/02, leading to a significant draw-down of cereal stocks.

While Afghanistan currently faces a grave food supply situation, food emergencies persist in many other countries (see box on page 6).

Kenya: UK donates 2.25 million pounds for food aid

NAIROBI, 14 December (IRIN) - The UN World Food Programme on Friday welcomed a 2.25 million pounds (sterling) donation, equivalent to some US $3.24 million, from the British government to help feed over three million Kenyans affected by drought - which affected the country severely in 2000 and earlier this year, and is still continuing in parts of the country.
"We are very pleased with this donation because it allows us to assist drought victims while supporting local farmers and the Kenyan economy," Tesema Negash, WFP Country Director for Kenya, said in a statement.

African meeting focuses on protracted refugee situations

GENEVA -- African delegations attending a one-day meeting on protracted refugee situations in Africa reiterated their commitment to helping the uprooted but urged more international help in tackling the root causes of displacement.
In a summary of the meeting, representatives from some 50 African nations also expressed concern over the emerging culture of impunity among some "refugee-exporting" nations in Africa and said more attention needed to be given to conflict prevention to avert new outflows.

In his opening remarks at the meeting,
