The food situation in Tanzania, and indeed in more than a score of Sub-Saharan countries, is alarming.

Long periods of drought and civil strife are among factors which have brought about acute food shortages, threatening lives of people in some of these countries.

Even now, when many countries in Eastern and Central Africa should be receiving rain, such countries are getting minimum or below average amounts.

Rome, 21 December 2000 - Some 28 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are facing severe food shortages as serious food supply problems persist in a number of countries, mainly because of prolonged drought and civil strife, according to a report released today by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). State Dept. Announcement on U.S. Funds to UNHCR

The U.S. State Department announced December 18 that the United States will make an initial contribution of $125 million dollars for the 2001 programs of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the world's leading agency in providing assistance and support to 23 million people who have fled their homelands.
Each world region is allocated a certain share of the U.S. contribution, with Africa to receive the largest single amount, $54 million, and Europe the second largest, $33 million.

UN refugee agency receives $214.7 million in early funding pledges for 2001

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has received pledges totalling $214.7 million towards the $953.7 million it requested in a global appeal for 2001, launched today in Geneva.
The United States topped the list of donations with $125 million, followed by Sweden with $40 million, the Netherlands with $23 million and Norway with $18 million. The pledges followed hard lobbying by UNHCR's outgoing High Commissioner, Sadako Ogata, who repeatedly warned donors that underfunding jeopardized the essence of the organization's work.

FEWS Tanzania Food Security Update: Nov 2000


Highlights
Continued sales of highly subsidized government food in November improved the food security status of 1.3 million highly food insecure people in 33 districts in 11 regions.

Availability of on-farm stocks, domestic food movements and stable prices of staples in markets provide satisfactory food security conditions for other populations in the country.

UNHCR receives early funding pledges from main donors

UNHCR was promised nearly one-fourth of its 2001 budget on Friday when several donor governments pledged US$214.7 million during the launch of the agency's annual global appeal. Another $23 million had been pledged earlier.
