Executive Summary

The Global Overview is a weekly update that provides a snapshot of current humanitarian priorities and recent events. Its primary objective is to rapidly inform humanitarian decision makers by presenting a summary of major humanitarian crises, both recent and protracted.

Tropical cyclone Evan hit Samoa and Fiji on 13 and 16 December. As a category 4 storm, Evan caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure on both islands.

1. BACKGROUND

Despite its abundant natural resources, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) was ranked last in the world in the Human Development Index in 2011 and its vulnerability index and crisis index ratings are amongst the highest in the world. The situation has deteriorated recently at a political level following the controversial campaign and outcome of the 2011 presidential and parliamentary elections.

1. CONTEXTE

En dépit de ressources naturelles abondantes, la RDC occupait en 2011 la dernière place du classement mondial établi sur la base de l’indice de développement humain et le pays obtient des indices de vulnérabilité et de crise parmi les plus élevés du monde. Récemment, le contexte a été fragilisé au niveau politique, avec un processus électoral et des résultats controversés lors des élections présidentielles et législatives de 2011.
