Outbreak of mosquito-borne diseases reported in South

BANGKOK, 20 May 2013 (NNT) - Southern residents are being warned of Chikungunya and dengue fever viruses, which can both be transmitted through a mosquito bite, while more than 200 dengue patients have been reported in Trang province.

According to Director-General of the Department of Medical Sciences Dr. Nipon Phopattanachai, patients found to have contracted the Chikungunya virus are mostly in the southern provinces of Trang, Satun, Chumphon and Surat Thani, and the infection rate is rising sharply.

Deliver Justice for 2010 Political Violence

(New York, May 18, 2013) – Three years on, the Thai government has failed to fulfill its promise to impartially prosecute all those responsible for the 2010 political violence, Human Rights Watch said today. Amnesty legislation being proposed by leading members of the ruling Pheu Thai Party would shield perpetrators of serious abuses from accountability and should be rejected.

Strong biosecurity measures needed to contain bird flu Implementing strong biosecurity measures coupled with good hygiene are required to contain the spread of the H7N9 strain of avian influenza virus, Hiroyuki Konuma, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific told a press conference in Bangkok on April 11. The virus had infected 82 people and killed 17 in China by April 19.

54 provinces still need drought-relief assistance

BANGKOK, 14 May 2013 (NNT) - The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has reported that there are still 54 provinces in need of emergency drought-relief assistance.

The DDPM Director General says that approximately 556 districts, 3,740 sub-districts and 36,580 villages in 54 provinces are still under risk of drought disasters. However, the southern province of Satun has been taken out of the list of disaster-hit provinces.

Transport Min distributes water to residents in Nakhon Ratchasima

BANGKOK, 14 May 2013 (NNT) – The Transport Ministry has distributed 50,000 liters of water to residents in Nakhon Ratchasima as drought continues in the province.

Deputy Transport Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong led a team of Transport officials and a convoy of water trucks on a field visit to Sung Noen District, which has been hard hit by drought. The team has provided drought-affected residents with around 50,000 liters of water for household use and consumption.

Public Health Min to stop spread of Malaria in 7 years

BANGKOK, 6 May 2013 (NNT)-The Ministry of Public Health is aiming to stop the outbreak of Malaria in Thailand within the next 7 years after nearly 2,500 people have been found with the disease so far this year.

According to Public Health Minister Dr. Pradit Sintawanarong, the Ministry has launched a campaign to stop the outbreak of Malaria permanently in 80% of the country’s total areas. Under the scheme, health examination services have been provided in the area where contraction of Malaria has been reported whilst those with infections will be treated on the spot.

BANGKOK [ACTED News] - ACTED recently selected 15 refugees living in two refugee camps along the Thai-Myanmar border to undergo a Training-of-Trainers (ToT) programme that aims to provide refugees from Myanmar with the technical skills to find a job in their home country once they feel ready and safe to return. This action has been undergone in the context of ACTED’s vocational training project funded by the European Commission.
