Australia provides assistance to Caribbean hurricane victims

The Australian Government has contributed $1,000,000 in financial aid for relief efforts in Haiti, Cuba and other Caribbean countries affected by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike and Tropical Storm Hanna.

Australia's grant will be distributed through the offices of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Australia's contribution will assist thousands of families affected by heavy winds and rains that caused significant damage to homes, infrastructure, crops and other livelihoods in the affected countries and territories.

Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) and Chevron Corporation contribute to Turks and Caicos Islands relief efforts

Bridgetown, Barbados, October 8, 2008 (CDERA) - The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA) has received US$25,000 from the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) and Chevron Corporation to go towards the purchase of relief items to assist persons affected by the recent impact of Hurricane Ike on the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI).

Grand Turk and South Caicos were declared Disaster Areas after Ike a Category Four Hurricane and Tropical Storm Hanna moved across the TCI early last month. The population was severely affected

Australia to help victims of Caribbean hurricanes and tropical storms

Australia will provide $1 million to relief efforts in the Caribbean to help the victims of Tropical Storm Fay and Hurricanes Gustav, Hanna and Ike.

The storm and hurricanes have affected an estimated 1.2 million people, with over 300,000 people displaced across the Caribbean.

Homes, schools, hospitals and basic infrastructure including power and water supplies have been damaged.

Australia's assistance will be provided through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies for relief supplies, temporary shelter, health services and other emergency

CARICOM rallying to help hurricane victims

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Technical assistance, relief supplies and financial resources are being provided by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to the countries affected by the disastrous events of the ongoing Atlantic hurricane season.

The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA) has mobilized its resources and is helping in the assessment of the damage and the provision of relief. A needs list is also being developed to determine further needs of the affected countries.

The hospital morgue still has about 20 bodies that were stored there before the storm. Health departmental authorities envision the need for a field hospital for an extended period of time until a new hospital is built in a safe area. In addition, several areas in the southern peninsula and parts of the north remained inaccessible until recently, and health services were not able

Needs still great in the Caribbean

Less than two weeks after Hurricane Ike began tearing across the Caribbean, the British Red Cross continues to appeal for donations to its Hurricane Appeal.

The appeal has now raised more than =A3110,000 net, including =A325,000 from the people of Jersey through the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission.

However, as Red Cross delegates assess long-term needs across the region, it is clear that more money is needed to help people who have lost everything.

UK gives £7 million for Caribbean hurricane victims

The British Government will provide up to =A37 million to help people devastated by the recent hurricanes in the Caribbean, International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander announced today.

The humanitarian relief will go to Haiti, Turks and Caicos and other Caribbean countries that have been badly damaged. DFID has already sent two humanitarian advisors to the Caribbean to assess what humanitarian help is needed.

In Haiti, the funding will help to provide direct assistance to the estimated 800,000 people who have lost their home
