The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) is the first multi-country risk pool in the world, and is also the first insurance instrument to successfully develop parametric policies backed by both traditional and capital markets. It is a regional catastrophe fund for Caribbean governments designed to limit the financial impact of devastating hurricanes and earthquakes by quickly providing financial liquidity when a policy is triggered.

Full-scale test today of Caribbean tsunami warning system

Thirty-two countries* will participate in a full-scale tsunami alert exercise in the Caribbean on 20 March 2013. The goal is to test the reaction capacity in countries of the Caribbean and adjacent regions, including the East Coast of Canada and the United States, the Gulf of Mexico and Bermuda. The exercise was organized under the auspices of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).

27 September 2012 – Decisions by a number of governments on the American continent to resume or intensify the deportation of forced Haitian migrants risks making them even more vulnerable than they currently are. After the earthquake on 12 January 2010, various Latin American announced the suspension of deportations of Haitians on humanitarian grounds. Some governments respected this moratorium; while others violated it.

GENEVA, 15 June 2012 - As the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season kicks off, all 16 member governments of the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) have committed for the sixth year in a row to renew their hurricane and earthquake insurance for 2012-2013 and earned themselves a 25% premium rebate.

In the last decade, the American continent suffered from 922 natural disasters, killing more than 247 thousand people, affecting over 82 million others and causing at least US$ 487 billion of economic damages. The Americas were the second most affected continent by natural disasters, after Asia, in terms of disaster occurrence and people killed. However the Americas took the largest share of economic damages during the decade (46% of worldwide damages).

PAHO calls for assistance for Bahamas and Turk and Caicos after Hurricane Irene

Bahamas, September 1, 2011 (PAHO/WHO)- The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and The Bahamas and Turk and Caicos health authorities are launching an appeal for international assistance to help 220,000 people, that were affected by Hurricane Irene last week.

The goal of this appeal is to reduce the public health impact of Hurricane Irene on the affected population of these islands.

Hurricane Irene traverses Caribbean: localised damage but no major losses

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, August 28, 2011 – The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) has announced that, while Hurricane Irene resulted in registered losses in six of its member countries (Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, the Bahamas, Haiti, St. Kitts & Nevis and the Turks & Caicos Islands), none of the policies of these countries were triggered. Of these territories, the highest losses were determined for the Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos Islands. None of the other four countries was impacted by more than lower Tropical Storm-force winds (under 50mph).

“Irene” podría convertirse en un peligroso ciclón categoría 4 al cobrar más intensidad en las cálidas aguas del mar Caribe, informó hoy el Centro Nacional de Huracanes (CNH) de Estados Unidos.

“Irene” se transformó hoy en un huracán categoría 3 en la escala de intensidad Saffir-Simpson de un máximo de cinco con vientos máximos sostenidos de 185 kilómetros por hora.

En esta trayectoria el ojo del huracán cruzará esta noche el sureste y centro de Bahamas para luego proseguir hacia el noroeste de esta nación caribeña mañana.

El huracán Irene se intensificó este miércoles con vientos de 185 km/h a su paso por las islas Bahamas y aumentó a categoría tres, cuando avanza al sureste de Estados Unidos con pronósticos de fortalecerse, indicó el Centro Nacional de Huracanes (NCH).

El ciclón que en las últimas horas había pasado de categoría uno a dos, se encontraba a 85 km al sureste de Acklins en las islas Bahamas y a 540 km al sureste de Nassau, precisó el informe meteorológico de las 12H00 GMT.

GRAND BAHAMA — L'ouragan Irène progressait mercredi matin en direction des Bahamas, après s'être renforcé au-dessus de l'archipel britanniques de Turks et Caïcos, et devrait atteindre les côtes américaines en fin de semaine.

Avec des vents de 175 km/h, la perturbation est passée en ouragan de force 2 sur l'échelle de Saffir-Simpson, qui compte cinq niveaux, selon le Centre national des ouragans (NHC) installé à Miami (Floride) qui a averti que l'ouragan pourrait encore gagner en puissance.

Miles de evacuados y poblados incomunicados por huracán en Dominicana

Más de siete mil personas permanecen evacuadas este martes en República Dominicana, donde se registran lluvias intensas, poblados incomunicados, cortes de electricidad, árboles caídos, casas destruidas e inundaciones costeras asociados al huracán Irene.

Mientras el fenómeno se aleja lentamente del litoral nororiental del país, decenas de viviendas están anegadas y 12 comunidades permanecen aisladas, informó el Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia, reporta Prensa Latina.

Hurricane Irene Strengthens, Takes Aim at the Bahamas

U.S. weather forecasters say Hurricane Irene, the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2011 season, has strengthened as it takes aim at the Bahamas and is expected to intensify.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its latest bulletin Monday that Irene had grown into a Category 2 storm on the five-point scale of hurricane intensity. Forecasters said the storm now had winds of 160 kilometers per hour and was located about 210 kilometers east of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. It was moving toward the west-northwest.
