Au total, 28 élections ont été organisées sur le continent. Un record ! C’est le signe que la démocratie y est toujours en marche… contre vents et marées dans un continent où le recours aux consultations électorales est devenu la règle et l’instrument de la gouvernance démocratique.

Southern Africa launches Disaster Risk Reduction Platform

Gaborone, 26 October 2011 – When unexpectedly heavy floods displaced more than a million people in southern Africa in 2007, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) began to meet annually to prepare for future occurrences, culminating in the creation of the SADC Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction this month.

The community’s regional platform was launched as member countries brace for a season of severe storms and floods that are expected to alternate with drought and long dry spells, predicted to continue until March next year.

Full-scale test of Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System to take place on 12 October

Almost seven years after the devastating tsunami of 2004, more than 20 nations* will participate on 12 October in a full-scale exercise to test the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System. This exercise, organized under the auspices of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, will also see responsibility for the issue of advisories handed over to the countries of the region through a new regional tsunami advisory service.

Luanda, 30 September 2011 -- The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Luis Sambo, has highlighted the substantial progress in HIV/AIDS control and encouraged countries of the African Region to implement a package of key interventions to improve universal access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care including the control of HIV/TB co-infection.

Bridging the gap between climate scientists and disaster risk reduction experts, during Fifteenth Southern Africa Region Climate Outlook Forum

Windhoek (Namibia), 27 August 2011 – The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Disaster Risk Reduction Unit in partnership with the World Bank’s Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) and UNISDR is conducting a disaster risk reduction (DRR) stakeholders training workshop from 27-28 August 2011. The workshop will be held alongside the Fifteenth Southern Africa Region Climate Outlook Forum (SARCOF-15) from 29-30 August 2011.
