Southern Africa: Acute malnutrition rates rise as food crisis deepens

Report
IRIN
[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]
JOHANNESBURG, 27 December (IRIN) - The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that it lacks adequate funding to deliver food aid to the most vulnerable people in Southern Africa.

Aid agencies estimate that some 12 million people are food insecure in the region, which has suffered widespread crop failures due to erratic weather. The impact of HIV/AIDS, deepening poverty and the weakened capacity of governments to care for people in need have exacerbated the current crisis.

Southern Africa's children face a New Year of hunger

Johannesburg, 22 December 2005 - While much of the rest of the world feasts over the holiday season, more than nine million southern Africans face an uncertain future in 2006 because WFP lacks the funding to deliver enough food aid to the hungriest in the region.
WFP needs US$77 million immediately to keep providing food aid in Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe - the countries hit hardest by the region's food crisis - until June 2006, when the next harvest is due.

Lesotho and Swaziland will also receive food aid for the same period.

Nothing natural about Southern Africa food crisis, charges ActionAid

Report
ActionAid
With six countries in Southern Africa facing a chronic food shortage, ActionAid charges that whilst the final trigger for the hunger facing the region has been lack of rain, the underlying causes are political and economic. This has led to extreme poverty and a consequent failure to cope with what has been a relatively "unexceptional" drought.
In Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Swaziland, Mozambique and Lesotho, the number of people requiring humanitarian assistance is estimated at 12 million. Two of the worst affected countries are Malawi and Zimbabwe with about 5 million and 2.9 million

Swaziland: Doubt over legality of protests keep Swazis at bay, for now

Report
IRIN
[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]
MBABANE, 16 December (IRIN) - Ambiguity over the legality of protests kept Swazis away from most political rallies and anti-government demonstrations in 2005, say pro-democracy groups battling to prompt reform in a country run by sub-Saharan Africa's last absolute monarch.

But the situation could change next year, when a bill of rights comes into effect.

Pro-democracy groups have had a dismal year in terms of attendance at rallies: a nationwide worker's stay-away

FAO/GIEWS Global Watch: Southern Africa update

Food insecurity in the region is of serious concern as the lean period has commenced and is affecting nearly 12 million people who are in need of emergency food assistance in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Swaziland, Lesotho, Mozambique and Zambia. Food shortages are generally reflected in rising staple food prices, especially in Zimbabwe and Malawi. Millions suffering food crisis across southern Africa

A massive humanitarian crisis is threatening millions of people across southern Africa.

Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia are the most severely affected by the crisis but it is also affecting people in Mozambique, Swaziland, Namibia and Lesotho.

In a region already struggling with chronic poverty, the combination of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, a volatile climate and

Southern Africa: Food security strengthened by cross-border cooperation

by Clever Mafuta

FOOD SECURITY is one of the region's most pressing challenges and active regional collaboration is offering a key solution.

Intra-regional trade, forward planning, innovative farming methods, food aid and a shift away from the traditional but droughtvulnerable staple maize, have helped southern Africa to avert starvation in the face of persistent droughts.

The four rainfall seasons since 2001 have all but one been drought years. Only the 2003/04 season had sufficient and well-distributed rains to ensure a good farming season in most parts of the region.

Swaziland: New dams to be built to boost irrigation

IRIN
[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]
MBABANE, 30 Nov 2005 (IRIN) - Three dams are to be built in southern Swaziland at a cost of R280 million (US $44 million), in response to nearly a decade of drought that has slashed agricultural production.

The dams, ranging from eight to 48 metres in height across the Lower Usuthu river, are expected to be completed in 2008 by a consortium of local and South African construction companies.

"Our primary object is to improve the lives of the people and we urge them to make use of the dams, which
