ZIMBABWE: Cholera outbreak
Eight people have died of cholera following an outbreak in the north of the country, the official daily, 'The Herald' reported on Tuesday.

The deaths were reported in Mashonaland West. The newspaper quoted health officials as saying 130 people had contracted the disease over the past month.

SWAZILAND: Journalists threatened and intimidated
At least two journalists were allegedly threatened and forced to leave their posts on 28 October following an apparent illegal strike by workers at the Swaziland Television Broadcasting Corporation (STBC), the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) said.

MISA said the six suspended workers were held directly responsible for the news blackout and seizure of the studios. According to reports received by MISA, the striking workers stormed the television studios, locked all the doors and took control. As a result

ZAMBIA: UNHCR confirms refugee influx from Angola
UNHCR has confirmed that there has been an influx of Angolan refugees into Zambia in recent weeks. UNHCR said that since 8 October about 650 new arrivals had been registered in the North Western Province, with a further 200 at Kalabo in Western Province.

UNHCR said that the recent influx of refugees was largely because of fighting between the UNITA rebel movement and government forces in Angola's Moxico Province, which borders Zambia's Western and North Western Provinces. The UN agency said that some of the

SOUTH AFRICA: Developing world's debt targeted ahead of IMF meeting
Trevor Manuel, the South African minister of finance, says that the Group of Seven industrialised inations have failed to live up to their promise of poor country debt relief and said that he would take this message with him to the IMF meeting in Washington next week.

Media reports on Monday quoted Manuel as saying: "The G7 committed in faith in Cologne to put money into HIPC [the IMF/World Bank's Highly Indebted Poor country Initiative]. We don't need faith alone, we need a few dollars in that HIPC fund."

ZIMBABWE: Government slams trial judge
Zimbabwe's Attorney-General said he would appeal against a six-month jail terms given to three Americans convicted of illegal arms possession and attempting to load dangerous weapons on an aircraft, Reuters reported.

Attorney-General Patrick Chinamasa said in a statement published by the state-owned 'Herald' newspaper that he would appeal to the Supreme Court for a review of the High Court sentence, which he said trivialised a serious offence.

ZIMBABWE: BHP sells majority stake in Zimplats
The Australian-based mining conglomerate BHP plans to sell its 67 percent majority holding in Zimbabwe's Hartley Platinum Mines (Zimplats), media reports said on Thursday.

President of BHP Zimbabwe, John Grubb was quoted as saying: "Despite BHP's and Zimbabwe Platinum Mines' best endeavors and positive support from the government during all phases of the development of Hartley, it has not been possible to overcome the operational and financial under performance."

SWAZILAND: Decline in economic growth expected
The Central Bank of Swaziland (CBS) has predicted a growth rate of only 2.5 percent for 1999/2000, the 'Swazi Observer' reported on Wednesday.

The CBS director of research, Cleopas Dlamini, was quoted as saying that growth was down by 0.5 percent from last year when Swaziland registered a growth rate of about 3 percent.
