The European Union (EU) is making today a contribution of approximately €7.4 million to the payment of the November salaries and pensions of more than 84,000 Palestinian civil servants and pensioners in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. This contribution is being channelled through the PEGASE[1] Direct Financial Support mechanism.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) reconfirms its strong commitment and support to the transitional process through its continued support to Yemen’s update to the Voter Registry, Constitutional Referendum and post-Referendum elections by the signing of an agreement in the amount of 27 million SEK (approximately US $4 million) with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) for the implementation of the Support to the Elections during the Transitional Period (SETP) project in Yemen.

Aid cuts threaten vital public services

KAMPALA, 17 December 2012 (IRIN) - Hundreds of millions of dollars in donor aid have been withheld from Uganda in recent months, threatening post-war rehabilitation in the northern region and key public investments across the country.

Keith Muhakanizi, deputy secretary to the Treasury, told IRIN that donors, under a Joint Budget Support Framework (JBSF) - including the World Bank, European Union, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Sweden and the United Kingdom - have suspended "about US$260 million", or 6 percent of the annual budget for at least six months.

UNICEF and the MSB collaborate on training emergency preparedness and response personnel

“The assistance of stand-by partners like the MSB is invaluable to the work of UNICEF”. That’s according to Frederick Spielberg, one of the facilitators on the four-day United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Emergency Preparedness and Prevention Training course held at MSB Revinge in December.

The course – that was developed in partnership between UNICEF and the MSB – aims to train staff from UNICEF’s stand-by partner organisations in the guiding principles and frameworks of UNICEF’s humanitarian work.

Sweden to contribute 21 million Swedish Krona (USD 3.3 million) with NSP/MRRD

During meeting with H.E. Minister Wais Ahmad Barmak, Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, Mr. Petersam Nabi Swedish Ambassador to Afghanistan said his country will provide an amount of USD 3.3 million for the National Solidarity Program (NSP) of the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) to be spent for the implementation of uplift projects in the local areas of the country.

New ambulances to Laghman

Two new Chinese model ambulances were donated by Ministry of Public Health to the Laghman province and Swedish Committee for Afghanistan who is maintaining the health care in Laghman. The ambulance was handed to the SCA Project Manager of Laghman and Mehterlam Provincial Hospital Director.

One of the two ambulances will be used on the main road of Kabul Jalalabad high way between Mashal Kamar and Darunta Dam for collection of injured patients after accidents. The patients will be shifted either to the Mehterlam Provincial Hospital or Nangarhar Regional Hospital.

Successful first test of Tsunami Warning System for the North Atlantic and Mediterranean

The exercise organized on 27 and 28 November to evaluate the functioning of the Tsunami Warning System for the North East Atlantic, Mediterranean and Adjacent Seas has taken place as scheduled. This real-time simulation, based on four scenarios in which earthquakes provoked tsunamis in different regions, demonstrated that the communication system for sending and receiving alert messages to concerned national authorities, worked smoothly.

Minister for International Development Cooperation visits Lebanon and Syrian border

On 27-28 November, Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson is visiting Lebanon and refugee camps close to the Syrian border to monitor the humanitarian needs that have arisen as a consequence of the conflict in Syria.

Lebanon is one of the countries that has clearly been affected by the conflict and has received more than 100 000 Syrian refugees. Sweden is one of the largest humanitarian aid donors to Syria and its neighbouring countries. This year, it has donated SEK 246 million, of which a significant portion has gone to Lebanon.

North Atlantic and Mediterrenean tsunami warning system put to the test

A simulated tsunami will strike the western and eastern coasts of the Mediterranean Sea and the North East Atlantic shoreline on 27 and 28 November, to test the Tsunami Early Warning and Mitigation System for the North-eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and connected seas. The exercise, named NEAMWave12, is organized under the umbrella of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).

The European Union is making a contribution of approximately €19.0 million to the payment of the October salaries and pensions of around 84,200 Palestinian civil servants and pensioners in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. This contribution, which is channelled through the PEGASE[1] mechanism, is being funded by the European Commission (€13.8 million), the Government of Sweden (SEK 35.0 million or c.€4.0 million) and the Government of the Netherlands (c.€1.2 million earmarked specifically to the PA salaries in the Justice sector).

IOM and the Government of Zimbabwe will today (12/10) inaugurate the newly refurbished Nyamapanda Temporary Reception Centre (NTRC) located on the Zimbabwe-Mozambique border, some 300 km east of the Zimbabwean capital, Harare.

The centre comprises an IOM operations office, an immigration office, a kitchen, a warehouse, a nursing building, an entertainment area, a water borehole and accommodation tents mounted on concrete slabs.

28 September 2012, Arusha — The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) announced a US$10 million grant to support the development of Africa-based innovations to boost African agricultural growth. Mr. Henrik Riby, Representative, Sida and Mrs. Jane Karuku, President of AGRA formalized the agreement this week in a signing ceremony at the African Green Revolution Forum in Arusha.

The United States Commitment to the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves - Year Two Progress Report

In honor of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves’ second anniversary, the United States is pleased to announce that total investment in support of the Alliance and clean cookstoves has reached up to $114 million. Government speeds towards Millennium Development Goals

The Government is allocating one per cent of estimated gross national income (GNI) to development cooperation in 2013. This means SEK 38.2 billion in total, an increase of around SEK 2.4 billion compared with 2012.

The Government is to spend over one billion kronor on special initiatives in the poorest countries, to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals concerning reduced infant mortality and increased access to water and sanitation, but also to strengthen engagement in democratisation and freedom of expression, and adaptation to climate change in the poorest countries.
