Swedish donation is significant boost to resources Trust Fund for Victims

New York, 16 December 2012

The Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) has announced a voluntary contribution of 10 million Swedish crowns - approximately 1.1 million Euros - to the Trust Fund for Victims at the International Criminal Court.

The announcement was made by the Swedish Government at the occasion of the 10th annual meeting of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute, which established both the Court and the Trust Fund.

Sweden and UNDP unveil a $16 Million Partnership

Sweden and the UNDP have unveiled a USD 16 million umbrella agreement to support UNDP Kenya programme activities on 15 December 2011.

Under this umbrella cost sharing partnership Sweden will contribute at least 16 million dollars to the UNDP Kenya programme. The contribution will be effected over a three year period and is aligned to the UNDP Kenya Country Programme Action Plan being implemented in line with the Government Vision 2030.

UN Humanitarian Chief welcomes Sweden’s contribution to the Horn of Africa crisis

(Stockholm /Geneva/New York, 9 December 2011): Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Valerie Amos, welcomed Sweden’s announcement of an additional US$10 million contribution to the Horn of Africa crisis.

“The Horn of Africa region continues to face the largest humanitarian crisis in the world, with four million people in need of urgent humanitarian aid in Somalia alone. Sweden’s contribution is vital if we are to sustain the fragile progress made this year,” emphasized Valerie Amos at the end of a two-day visit to Sweden.

UNDP Signs Partnership Agreements in Support of Democratic Governance and Rule of Law

Jerusalem, 01 December 2011 - UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People signed two separate agreements today worth approximately USD 6 million with the Governments of Denmark, Sweden and EUPOL COPPS in an effort to reinforce transparency and democratic governance.

This is an important part of the gradual transition from military to increased civilian involvement. Natural disasters, including drought, earthquakes, floods, and wildfires, as well as ongoing complex emergencies and limited government capacity in the region, present significant challenges to vulnerable populations in Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia (EMCA). Between Fiscal Year (FY) 2002 and FY 2011, USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) and USAID’s Office of Food for Peace (USAID/FFP) provided assistance in response to a range of disasters, including floods, wildfires, winter emergencies, and complex crises.

The small-scale water reservoirs are therefore important for people in rural areas and more drain-off reservoirs will be repaired and new ones will be built under the Sida-funded water reservoirs project.

Geneva – The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria warmly welcomes Sweden’s decision to disburse its 2011 contribution to the Global Fund in full and to announce a pledge of Swedish kronor 2 billion (U.S. $300 million) for 2011–2013, an increase of 11 percent over its contributions for the previous three-year period.

FAO project helps Kenyan farmers withstand drought

Farm investments today can prevent food security crises tomorrow

13 October 2011, Mwingi, Kenya - With the October rainy season starting, FAO is helping more than 5 000 vulnerable farming households in eastern Kenya terrace their fields to conserve rain water for crop use and prevent the soils from being washed away. They are also building simple dams for better harvesting of rain water.

In return for their labour, the farmers receive vouchers that can be redeemed for food as well as building materials for the community-owned dams.

When new technology saves lives

In Tanzania, maternal health care is free of charge but many women, particularly in rural areas, can’t even afford transportation to a hospital. Mobile phones are offering a solution. The United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, supports a project that facilitates access to fistula treatment by transferring money through SMS to cover travel expenses to a clinic.

Sweden contributes US$ 6 million toward efforts to end sexual and gender based violence in Liberia

Monrovia, Liberia. 08 September 2011. Sweden today signed an agreement with the United Nations, providing SEK 38 million (approximately US$ 6 million) in support of efforts to prevent and respond to sexual and gender based violence in Liberia. Mr. Klas Gierow, Acting Chargé d’Affaires at the Swedish Embassy in Monrovia signed on behalf of the Government of Sweden, while the Resident Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Ms. Esperance Fundira, signed on behalf of the UN in Liberia.

Sweden to contribute SEK 40 million to the Palestinian Authority

Sweden is to contribute SEK 40 million this year via the EU financing mechanism PEGASE (Palestinian-European Mechanism for Management of Socio- Economic Aid) in direct support to the Palestinian Authority. The support will go towards salaries and pensions for employees in the Palestinian administration.

"The Palestinian Authority has made great progress in its state-building efforts and I think it is important that Sweden continues to support their work", says Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson.

"Two regions in Somalia have already been affected by famine, and more areas are at risk in the coming months. Horn of Africa Drought: CERF Support in 2011 (as of 28 Jul 2011)

Drought in the Horn of Africa has left 12.4 million people in need of help. While international attention to the emergency has peaked in recent weeks, CERF funds have been addressing the crisis since rainfalls failed at the end of 2010. More than $94 million dollars has been allocated to drought-affected countries this year.

Sweden increases humanitarian aid to Kenya and Somalia

The Swedish Government has decided to increase the humanitarian aid to Kenya and other countries in the Horn of Africa with KES 2,9 billion. The additional funds are intended to meet basic needs such as health, food, water, sanitation and protection of children.

Sweden’s additional support to Kenya amounts to KES 428 million. It is directed towards the drought struck Kenyan people and the rapidly increasing numbers of refugees in Kenya. Sweden’s humanitarian aid to Kenya now totals KES 1,9 billion in 2011.
