UNHCR Syria Fact Sheet - June 2012 (EN/AR)

  • An overwhelming majority of Iraqi refugees 91.6% of refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Syria are from Iraq. The Government of Syria, which has continuously implemented a generous policy towards the stay of Iraqi refugees, estimates that the country hosts about one million Iraqis. 64.6% come from the region of Baghdad alone and 62.4% sought refuge in Syria five or more years ago. 35% of the 27,681 families registered are female-headed households.

  • A UN agency warned that 750,000 children under the age of five are suffering from malnutrition in Yemen, with half a million at risk of dying this year if adequate support is not provided.

  • The education of thousands of children across the country continues to be disrupted by the occupation of schools by armed forces and armed groups, as well as the use of schools as shelters for IDPs.

As of 06:00 GMT, 8 May 2009, 24 countries have officially reported 2384 cases of influenza A (H1N1) infection.

Mexico has reported 1112 laboratory confirmed human cases of infection, including 42 deaths. The United States has reported 896 laboratory confirmed human cases, including two deaths.

- According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the U.N. World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a logistics plan for distribution of a portion of the WHO global anti-viral stockpiles to most-affected or at-risk countries, including Mexico. WHO plans to begin distribution of 2.4 million courses of anti-virals in the coming week.
