Secretary-General forms "group of Friends" to consult on UN operations in Kosovo

Secretary-General Kofi Annan has formed a "group of Friends" for Kosovo to consult on issues facing the United Nations mission as it sets up operations in the province, a UN spokesman said on Friday.
The United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) is leading the massive international effort to rebuild Kosovo into a functioning, democratic society.

Mr. Annan has invited 13 countries and three international organizations to come to New York next Wednesday. The provisional list of Friends includes Canada, China, Finland, France, Germany

Clinton visits Kosovar refugee camp in Macedonia

SKOPJE, June 22 (AFP) - President Bill Clinton arrived in Macedonia Tuesday, where he was to visit ethnic Albanian refugees from Kosovo at a camp in Stenkovec, a few kilometers (miles) from the Kosovo border.

Clinton, who arrived from Ljubljana, Slovenia, was to hold separate meeting with leaders from Macedonia, President Kiro Gliborov and Prime Minister Ljubco Georgievski, and Albania, President Rexhep Meidani and Prime Minister Pandeli Majko.

Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer told representatives of more than 30 countries and non-governmental organizations in Bonn on May 27 that his proposed "Balkan stabilization pact" must include realistic prospects for EU membership for Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Yugoslavia and Albania, the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" reported. Planning for the future of the Balkans

A number of proposals for the post-Kosova Balkans have appeared recently, most notably German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer's plan for a Southeastern European Regional Roundtable. His and other ideas will be fleshed out in the coming weeks, especially at a conference that the German government will host in Bonn on 27 May. Chirac asks for EU meeting on Kosovo refugee crisis

The Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the territory of the former Yugoslavia, Jiri Dienstbier, will undertake a two-week mission to the region starting this Sunday.

He will spend the first week in Croatia, meeting with Government officials including the Foreign Minister and the Ministers of Justice and Interior, and visiting the former conflict zones, including Eastern Slavonia. He will travel to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia on 15 February, and will spend several days in the region of Vojvodina in northern Serbia.
