A systematic expulsion of Kosovars by huge refugee trains appears to be underway.

A total of six trains carrying many thousands of people arrived in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYRM) in the last two days.

Arriving Kosovars interviewed at the border said they they were systematically thrown out of their homes at gunpoint and herded aboard trains for a "free ride to Macedonia."

Slovenia Earthquake OCHA Situation Report No. 1

GENERAL INFORMATION

1. SOME 700 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN LEFT HOMELESS AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE MEASURING 5.5 ON THE RICHTER SCALE WHICH SHOOK NORTHWEST SLOVENIA ON SUNDAY 12 APRIL 1998 AT 12:55 L.T.

2. THE EPICENTRE OF THE EARTHQUAKE, ALSO FELT IN NEIGHBOURING ITALY, CROATIA AND AUSTRIA, WAS IN THE KOBARID AND BOVEC REGIONS, SOME 75 KM FROM LJUBLJANA. THE SLOVENE NATIONAL GEOPHYSICS INSTITUTE REPORTED THAT MORE THAN 150 AFTERSHOCKS HAD BEEN REGISTERED SINCE THE MAIN EVENT ON 12 APRIL, THE TWO STRONGEST MEASURING 3.3 ON THE RICHTER SCALE.

Slovenia - Waste Dump Fire Situation Report No.2

1. THE SLOVENIAN AGENCY FOR CIVIL DEFENCE HAS INFORMED THE JOINT UNEP/DHA ENVIRONMENT UNIT THAT A FIRE AT A WASTE DUMPING SITE IN NORTH-EASTERN SLOVENIA HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY EXTINGUISHED, WITHOUT AFFECTING THE ENVIRONMENT.

2. THE ACCIDENT SITE IS UNDER CONTROL. NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE IS NEEDED.

3. THE SLOVENIAN AUTHORITIES EXPRESS THEIR GRATITUDE TO PROFESSIONALS FROM A NUMBER OF COUNTRIES AND ORGANIZATIONS, WHO PROVIDED USEFUL INFORMATION AND ADVICE DURING THE FIREFIGHTING.

4. THIS IS THE LAST SITUATION REPORT ON THIS ACCIDENT.

Slovenia - Waste Dump Fire Situation Report No.1

1. A WASTE DUMP CONTAINING LEAD MINING WASTE HAS CAUGHT FIRE IN NORTH-EASTERN SLOVENIA. THE DUMP, IN THE VILLAGE OF MEZICA IN THE REGION OF CARINTHIA, CONTAINS 23000 CUBIC METRES OF MIXED LEAD MINING WASTE AND ORGANIC WASTE SEPARATED BY A GRAVEL BUFFER. CONCERN WAS EXPRESSED BY THE SLOVENIAN AUTHORITIES THAT INCORRECT FIRE-FIGHTING TECHNIQUES COULD RELEASE CHLORINE-BASED GASES.

2. THE SLOVENIAN AGENCY FOR CIVIL PROTECTION AND DISASTER RELIEF REQUESTED ADVICE ON TACKLING THE FIRE FROM THE JOINT UNEP/DHA ENVIRONMENT UNIT. NO DIRECT ASSISTANCE HAS BEEN REQUESTED.
