A cholera epidemic has broken out on the
island nation of Sao Tome and Principe near western Africa. Thousands have
come down with the disease, and by January 1, at least 30 people had died.
ADRA's office in Sao Tome responded
with an immediate campaign to fight back against the epidemic.
Over the past several years, ADRA organized
women's development associations in 50 rural villages. These groups are
distributing disinfectants and teaching local residents how to prevent
the transmission of cholera. The strategy is designed to reach 5,500 people
