26 juillet 2012, Rome - Une nouvelle initiative régionale aidera dix pays d'Afrique centrale à mettre en place des systèmes pointus de monitorage des forêts nationales, annonce la FAO aujourd'hui.

Ces dix pays, qui font partie du Bassin du Congo, sont le Burundi, le Cameroun, le Gabon, la Guinée équatoriale, la République centrafricaine, la République du Congo, la République démocratique du Congo, le Rwanda, Sao Tomé et Principe et le Tchad.

AFRICA: Snake oil salesmen and dodgy HIV "cures"

NAIROBI/JOHANNESBURG, 19 January 2012 (PLUSNEWS) - Uganda's National Drug Authority recently arrested sales representatives of a company selling a drug that purports to cure HIV; the firm's owners are not licensed to sell medicine and are being sought by the police.

The drug, known as Virol ZAPPER, was being sold in 37ml liquid doses, each costing about US$210; patients were advised to take 10 drops daily. It was being advertised on local radio and TV stations as a miracle cure for HIV.

WHO/AFRO welcome preliminary results of malaria vaccine trials

The World Health Organization’s Regional Office for Africa has welcomed the announcement that trials of a malaria candidate vaccine show promising results by providing protection against clinical malaria in children.

The results were announced at the Global Malaria Forum hosted by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle, USA and published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa ‎‎(BADEA), has signed four loan agreements worth US $ ‎‎25.2 million for the benefit of four countries – Sao Tomé & ‎Principe, Mali, Tanzania and Kenya.‎ The agreements were signed on sideline of The Annual ‎Meetings of the the World Bank Group and the ‎International Monetary Fund (IMF) that took place in ‎Washington, during the period 20-24 September 2011.

SAO TOME AND PRINCIPE, 17 March (Office for Disarmament Affairs) - On 16 March, at its thirty-second ministerial meeting held in Sao Tomé, the United Nations Standing Advisory Committee on Security Questions in Central Africa adopted the "Sao Tomé Declaration on a Central African Common Position on the Arms Trade Treaty".

The United Nations Committee is composed of the following Member States: Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Rwanda and Sao Tome and Principe.

1. The Government of Japan has decided to extend grant aid (food aid) of 250 million JPY to the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe. Notes to this effect were exchanged on January 15 (Fri) (local time: January 14 [Thu]) in Sao Tome (capital of Sao Tome and Principe) between Mr. Motoi Kato, Ambassador of Japan to the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe (serves in the Gabonese Republic as Ambassador to the Gabonese Republic as well), and M. Carlos Alberto Pires Tiny, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Communities of the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe.
