Nutrition Survey Final Report - Maban Refugee Camps, South Sudan, February/March 2013

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Nutrition situation in South Sudan has remained precarious over the years owing to chronic food insecurity. The populations displaced from South Kordofan and Blue Nile states from 2011 owing to conflict, were installed into camps in the Maban county and high levels of malnutrition among the children was described as a humanitarian crisis. A survey conducted by Médecins sans Frontières -Belgium (MSF-B) in Batil camps subsequently in August 2012, revealed Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rate of 39.8%.

Jamam Camp Snapshot, April 2013

Highlights

UNHCR began on 06 May 2013, the relocation of 18,200 Sudanese refugees from flood prone Jamam refugee camp, to the new site, Kaya, ahead of the onset of this year’s seasonal rains.

Clashes between host and refugee communities in Doro camp illustrate the possible threat of civil unrest across Maban. Efforts are underway to bring the two communities together.

Over 95% of refugee children have been immunized during the national polio immunization campaign this month.

• Civilians in Pibor, Jonglei State, again fled the town amid escalating tension and widespread looting of civilian property and humanitarian supplies.

· Although the recent good performance of seasonal rainfall has enhanced water and pasture availability in most drought-prone areas of Ethiopia, populations in some belg-producing parts of eastern Ethiopia will likely continue to experience Crisis—Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) 3—level food insecurity through June due to delayed and poorly distributed February-to-May 2013 belg rains and resulting planting disruptions.

Situation highlights

The health situation across the Republic of South Sudan remains fragile and unpredictable. There are high risks of communicable diseases, floods and drought, low access to safe drinking water, food insecurity, and poor sanitation. Environmental factors contribute to the spread of diseases such as water and vector-borne diseases like diarrhoeal diseases, hepatitis, malaria and dengue fever.

South Sudan: Humanitarian Funding Update (as of 30 April 2013)

As of 30 April, the humanitarian appeal South Sudan CAP (in million $) Common Humanitarian Fund (CHF) was 38 per cent funded. US$ 412 million was requested for projects of high immediate priority, out which $256 million has been secured to procure, transport and preposition emergency aid in remote locations before the rainy season. The humanitarian community appealed for $1.16 billion to address urgent humanitarian needs in South Sudan for 2013.

Highlights

• The killing of the Ngok Dinka Paramount Chief in Abyei sparks new tensions between the Ngok Dinka and Misseriya communities.

• Aid agencies mobilise resources to meet the needs of some 40,000 newly displaced people in parts of South Kordofan.

• According to humanitarian agencies, the total number of people displaced from Labado and Muhajeria is estimated at 60,000.

• About 10,000 people flee their homes near Nyala following inter-tribal clashes in the Bulbul Abugazo area

IOM Relocates Refugees in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State

IOM is helping to relocate refugees from Jamam camp in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State to a new site that will offer better access to basic services and flood protection.

Relocation operations began on 6 May and are expected to continue for the next seven to eight weeks. A total of 1,210 individuals and their luggage had been moved as of 8th May. It is expected that an average of 600 persons will be transported per day.

The refugees, mainly women, children and a growing number of older people, have escaped conflict and hardship in Sudan's Blue Nile state, but the influx is likely to slow when the rains come.
