2013 Annual Statistical Report on United Nations Procurement

United Nations increases health spending in 2013

COPENHAGEN, 10 July 2014 – The value of procurement of goods and services by the United Nations was $16.1 billion in 2013, with the largest sums spent on pharmaceuticals, healthcare services, medical equipment, transportation, construction and food.
These highlights are part of the latest Annual Statistical Report on UN Procurement, which provides data and analysis on the goods and services procured by the UN system in support of its operations.

HRH Princess Haya contributes to reducing malnutrition rates of South Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia

ABU DHABI, 9th July, 2014 (WAM) -- UN Messenger of Peace and Chairperson of the International Humanitarian City, IHC, H.R.H. Princess Haya bint Al Hussein, wife of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the U.A.E., and Ruler of Dubai, has made a generous contribution of USD500,000 to support the UN High Commissioner for Refugees' efforts in emergency nutrition and food security for South Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia’s Gambella region.

Dengue in Pakistan

The dengue fever (DF) outbreak in Khy-ber Pakthunkhwa (KPK) province of Pakistan, reported in weekly epidemiol-ogical monitor (Volume-6, issue-37, dated 15 September 2013), has subsided. This was one of the major outbreaks of den-gue fever reported ever from this prov-ince in the country. As of November 2013, a total of 8,494 laboratory-confirmed cases of DF were reported from this province. As reported earlier, the district of Swat was the most af-fected area in the province.

Yellow fever in Sudan

Between 03 October to 14 December 2013, a total of 49 suspected cases of Yellow fever were reported including 15 deaths (CFR: 30.6%) from the West Kordofan state of Sudan. As reported in the weekly epidemiological monitor, issue no: 45, volume-6, yellow fever was confirmed by serology and neutralization assay on samples retested at the WHO reference laboratory in Dakar, Senegal.

Call for strengthening surveillance for SARI

There has been a renewed call to strengthen surveillance for severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) in the countries of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region. This was the main recommendation of a recently concluded intercountry meeting of the Eastern Mediterranean Acute Respiratory Infection Surveillance Network held at Sharm-El-Shaikh, Egypt from 24-27 November 2013.

Switzerland Backs IOM's Humanitarian Evacuation of Migrant Workers from Syria

The Swiss Federal Office for Migration (FOM) has contributed US$ 300,000 towards IOM's evacuation operations of most vulnerable migrant workers caught up in the Syrian crisis.

IOM will use the contribution to evacuate up to 250 extremely vulnerable Third Country Nationals (TCNs). These include minors, the elderly, pregnant women, people in detention due to their irregular status, those with medical conditions and nationals of countries with no diplomatic representation in Syria.

La Suisse soutient l’évacuation humanitaire des travailleurs migrants par l’OIM depuis la Syrie

Suisse - L’Office fédéral suisse des migrations (ODM) a fait don de 300 000 dollars pour financer les opérations d’évacuation des travailleurs migrants les plus vulnérables pris dans la crise syrienne. L’OIM utilisera les fonds pour évacuer jusqu’à 250 ressortissants de pays tiers extrêmement vulnérables. Il s’agit notamment de mineurs, de personnes âgées, de femmes enceintes, de personnes détenues en raison de leur statut irrégulier, de cas médicaux et de ressortissants de pays qui n’ont aucune représentation diplomatique en Syrie.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • More than 16,000 people have been displaced by fighting between the SAF and SPLM-N forces in the El Moreib area in South Kordofan in recent weeks, according to HAC.

  • In North Darfur, 95 per cent of the 25,000 people who fled from Kassab IDP camp in Kutum have returned.

  • In Kadugli, South Kordofan, food distribution for 32,000 displaced people has begun.
