Health in Emergencies Issue 15, Dec 2002

Health intelligence in emergencies: which information and why?
by Paul Ickx, Management Services for Health, AHSEP

In mid-1999, almost 1,800 million people were living in countries at severe risk of, affected by or emerging from armed conflicts. The "complexity" of these emergencies does not end when a formal cease fire is signed or political elections are held. On the contrary, the transition is a particularly difficult and fragile situation. For instance, in Afghanistan like in other post-conflict countries,

    Staking out peace in Somalia

ARABSIYO, SOMALIA - With his grandsons giggling and darting back and forth between the maize and fruit trees, 77-year-old Mohamed Dahir Liban makes his morning rounds to check on his farm. Slowed down by a limp, he carefully makes his way over the fields, and is pleased the current crop is coming up well.
"This"-he says with satisfaction, his frail hand indicating the farm where he grows maize, bananas, oranges and limes, and raises cattle, sheep and goats-"will go to my sons. The card shows it belongs to our family," he says, pulling a laminated

Latest information confirms a sharp drop in global cereal production in 2002, to 1 833 million tonnes. As a result of this, and a marginal rise expected in total cereal utilization in 2002/03, world cereal stocks for crop years ending in 2003 are forecast to plunge sharply, by 110 million tonnes from their opening level, to 466 million tonnes.

The number of countries facing severe food emergencies worldwide stands at 39. Serious food shortages have emerged in eastern Africa, and the food situation remains critical in southern Africa.

Food crises in the Horn of Africa and in southern Africa: Remarks by Minister Tom Kitt TD to the Foreign Affairs Committee 18 Dec 2002

I am delighted to have the opportunity today to address the Foreign Affairs Committee on the subject of the food crises in the Horn of Africa and in southern Africa.

As we look forward to Christmas the figures concerning famine emanating from Africa are stark. They serve as a damning indictment of our collective failure to address the needs of the most vulnerable at the beginning of a new millennium.

It is estimated that at least 28 million people will be affected by the current food shortages in the Horn of Africa and southern Africa. In Africa generally there are at least 38 million

Red Crescent clinics provide unique lifeline for Somalis

    Report
    IFRC
    by Andreï Neacsu in Mogadishu/Nairobi
In Somalia, life expectancy is just 47 years; every day 45 Somali women die as a result of complications during pregnancy or childbirth; only one in ten infants is fully immunised against all major diseases; nearly 15,000 new tuberculosis cases are registered every year.

These are figures one might expect from a country ravaged by over a decade of war. But they would probably be even worse if it were not for a nationwide network of 49 Red Crescent clinics, which represent the only reliable source of basic health care for thousands of Somalis.
