Over 20 million people in north-east Nigeria, South Sudan, Yemen and Somalia are already at or over the tipping point of famine. Thanks to the generosity of its donors, CERF has released $62 million for early action and life-saving operations in Nigeria and Somalia. In north-east Nigeria, CERF funds are reaching an estimated 2.9 million people affected by Boko Haram related violence and food insecurity. In Somalia, CERF is helping more than 1 million vulnerable people in severe drought areas in Puntland, Somaliland and South Central.

Baidoa, 23 April 2017 - Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo today visited the capital of South West state to assess the effects of drought on the federal member state that has been hardest hit by the crisis.

It marked the first trip of President Farmaajo outside Mogadishu since he took office last February.

Jordan hosts asylum seekers and refugees from different neighbouring countries. As of 31st December 2016, 655,344 (514,274 and 141,070 in urban and camps respectively) Syrian refugees have been registered with UNHCR Jordan office since the onset of crisis in 2011. In addition, Jordan hosts asylum seekers and refugees from Iraq, Sudan, Yemen and Somalia.

Voluntary repatriation

  • During the reporting period, 1,836 refugees were supported to return to their homes in Somalia. As of 15th April 2017, 61,665 Somali refugees have returned home since 8th December 2014, when UNHCR started supporting voluntary return of Somali refugees in Kenya, out of which 22,351 were supported in 2017 alone. Currently, 20,991 refugees are registered for voluntary repatriation.

April 24, 2017 – WHO Representative for Somalia Dr Ghulam Popal and Somalia’s Minister of Health and Social Services H.E. Dr Fawziya Abikar conducted a visit to Baidoa, along with national, regional and local health officials, to assess the cholera situation and outbreak response in South West State. The high-level mission aimed to demonstrate the commitment of WHO and the Ministry of Health to outbreak and drought response activities in the state, and included visits to cholera treatment centres (CTCs) in Baidoa and Bayhow hospitals.

  • A total of 2,984 AWD/ cholera cases and 34 deaths (CFR– 1.1%) were reported during week 15 (10 – 16 April 2017) in 50 districts in 13 regions. Of these, 175 cases were reported from Iidale village(in-accessible) district Baidoa in Bay region, which represents 5.9% of the total cases.

  • There is a slight decrease in the number of new AWD/ cholera cases and deaths reported – 2984 cases/ 34 deaths were recorded in week 15 compared to 3128 cases/ 32 deaths in week 14.

SHARJAH, 23rd April, 2017 (WAM) -- Sharjah Charity International donated AED4 million for the relief campaign targeting vulnerable people in Somalia, under the slogan "For You Somalia", which aims to eliminate suffering caused by the drought crisis affecting large areas of the country.

The campaign is an implementation of the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in co-operation with the Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, and all UAE charity organisations and foundations.

U.S. officials are reluctant to label a recent spike in piracy off the waters of Somalia as a trend.

"We're not ready to say there is a trend there yet, but we'll continue to watch," Marine General Thomas Waldhauser said Sunday at a news conference at a military base in the tiny African nation of Djibouti where U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis was visiting.

Waldhauser suggested that drought and famine in the region had led pirates to carry out the six recent attacks on commercial ships carrying food and oil.
