Rapid food security assessment in western area, Sierra Leone - Dec 2008

In response to poverty as a result of the recent increases in food prices, the Government in collaboration with WFP, FAO, UNICEF, and other partners have designed interventions aimed at mitigating the impact of high food prices on vulnerable households in urban and peri-urban areas. In Kabul, Laghman, and Nangahar, 763 families received packages of fresh Udhiyah meat.

Iraq

Over 10,000 pounds of fresh meat was distributed to 2,300 poor Iraqi families, as well as a number of orphans, in the provinces of Baghdad, Anbar, Diyala, and Mosul.

Jordan

Udhiyah meat was distributed to 580 families living in Palestinian refugee camps and isolated rural villages.

Lebanon

In the governorates of Tripoli and Sidon LIFE distributed Udhiyah meat to 130 needy families.

Sierra Leone's war amputees angrily await reparations

Makeni, Sierra Leone, 22 December 2008 - War amputees in Sierra Leone are complaining of their treatment and of a stalled reparation program, nearly seven years since the end of the country's brutal civil war. Human rights activists say amputees are being ostracized, but the government says it is working hard to make sure the reparation program is a success.

IMF Executive Board completes third review under PRGF arrangement for Sierra Leone, increases financial assistance to mitigate food and fuel price impact, and approves US$10.8 million disbursement

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) today completed the third review of Sierra Leone's performance under a four-year arrangement under the Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility (PRGF). The Board also approved an SDR 10.4 million (about US$16.1 million) augmentation to help strengthen Sierra Leone's foreign reserve position to cope with the external shocks from world food and fuel price increases and the unfolding global financial crisis. DAKAR, 18 December 2008 (IRIN) - For the second consecutive year Sierra Leone has come last in the UN Development Programme ranking of human development indicators of 179 countries.

Some analysts say Sierra Leone is nonetheless advancing in some areas and that the impact of the country's 11-year civil war must be taken into account for a full true measure of progress.

NEW YORK, 16 December 2008 - In keeping with a tradition started four years ago, this holiday season the IKEA Social Initiative will use proceeds from the sale of IKEA soft toys to help finance education projects run by UNICEF and Save the Children.

As part of the "1 euro is a fortune..." campaign, which kicked off in November and will continue until 24 December, 1 euro from every soft toy that IKEA Group sells in its 258 stores worldwide will go to projects aimed to improve children's education.
