2. Executive Summary

Sierra Leone is a small West African country endowed with substantial mineral, marine and natural resources that, properly utilized, could have provided its four to five million citizens with one of the highest standards of living in the world. Due to more than four decades of over-centralized power, institutionalized corruption, mismanagement of resources and the marginalization of a large proportion of its population from the decision-making process, this potentially rich country not only

Report

Rome, 15 December 2006 - A new film, Blood Diamond, focuses on how profits from the diamond industry fuelled Sierra Leone's brutal conflict in the 1990s -- a period when WFP food aid was a lifesaver for the thousands of civilians caught in the crossfire.

Paul Arès talks to WFP web writer Michelle Hough about his experiences as WFP regional manager for West Africa from 1997-2000.

When Paul Arès fell into conversation with diamond traders in hotel bars in Sierra Leone, they would tell him they dealt in "melons and bananas".

Sierra Leone: Blood, diamonds and hunger

Freetown, 8 December 2006 - WFP helped feed victims throughout Sierra Leone's long-running civil war and it is contributing to recovery. Hilary Heuler looks at WFP operations in this west African country.

Filled with images of amputated limbs and children carrying AK47s, the decade-long civil war in Sierra Leone is one which stunned the outside world by its sheer brutality and indiscriminate violence.

It can still be difficult to believe that such ugliness was made possible by trading weapons for diamonds, the very same ones we wear on our fingers in the West.
