UNHCR continues to assist IDPs return under the interagency collaborative framework. Thousands of IDPS have volunteered to return under the facilitated IDP/spontaneous returnee movement. During the past week, UNHCR, IOM and other partners, jointly expedited the return of 1, 356 IDPs to various towns and villages in Bo Waterside (Tewor District) and Tahn (in Gola-Konneh District). Assessment Mission Determines Conditions Not Yet Met for Lifting Ban

The Security Council today renewed the arms, timber, travel and diamond sanctions on Liberia, after determining through an August to November assessment mission to the country that the National Transitional Government had not yet met the conditions for lifting the measures.

Through resolution 1579 (2004), adopted unanimously, the arms, timber and travel bans were renewed for 12 months and will be reviewed after six, while the ban on the sale of rough diamonds

Liberian refugees go home for the holidays and harvest

MONROVIA, Liberia, Dec 7 (UNHCR) - The largest return convoy to date has left Sierra Leone for Liberia as the UN refugee agency winds down facilitated repatriation before the year-end festive season. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to help returnees achieve a good harvest for the coming year.

On Monday, 250 Liberian refugees left their camps in Sierra Leone in the largest single convoy back to Liberia since UNHCR started the region-wide repatriation operation on October 1. Carrying domestic animals such as cats, dogs and chickens, some of the
