Pakistani pull-out from S. Leone would hurt UN force: commander

FREETOWN, Dec 31 (AFP) - A pull-out of Pakistani peacekeepers from Sierra Leone would be a big blow to the UN force here, the force's deputy commander said Monday, amid widespread reports of a possible withdrawal due to rising tension between Islamabad and New Delhi.

"I hope it doesn't happen and hope the problem (between India and Pakistan) will be resolved so that we can continue. This will be a big setback to UNAMSIL and the peace process in Sierra Leone," said General Martin Luther Agwei, the second-in-command of the UN peacekeeping force in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL).

Sierra Leone: Disarmament resumes in Tongo Field

Report
IRIN
ABIDJAN, 31 December (IRIN) - Disarmament of former rebel fighters resumed on Sunday in Kenema District in eastern Sierra Leone after the process had stalled for just over a week due to unrest in the area, deputy UN Mission in Sierra Leone spokesman Patrick Coker told IRIN on Monday.
"On Sunday 209 RUF [Revolutionary United Front] disarmed in Tongo Field" Coker said.

Former combatants had stopped handing over weapons two to three days after violent clashes erupted on 19 December between individuals involved in diamond mining in Koidu town, he added.

UN warns against international donors forgetting Sierra Leone

by Jacques Lhuillery

PORT LOKO, Sierra Leone, Dec 29 (AFP) - United Nations officials have warned the international community against forgetting Sierra Leone, where a fragile peace has returned after years of civil war.

With some half a million people in Sierra Leone still totally dependent on aid from the UN and the World Food Programme (WFP), UN officials have made no secret of their fears that what they call the "bin Laden effect" -- which means over one-quarter of international aid is earmarked for Afghanistan -- will harm other UN peace-keeping operations

Liberian citizens complain of harassment by security forces

Monrovia (dpa) - Security forces are harassing people in northwestern Liberia, leading to a mass exodus of citizens to neighbouring Sierra Leone and other parts of the county, an official said Friday.

"We have been informed by our citizens that where there is no presence of dissidents in these areas, security officers have advised them to leave their towns and villages indicating these areas are not safe," said James Lomei, the district spokesman for Porkpa and Gola Konneh.

ARC special report on Sierra Leone: Helping a war-torn country to recover

By Martha Saldinger, ARC Sierra Leone Country Director
The American Refugee Committee began operating in Sierra Leone in 2000 to help the people rebuild their lives and their country after a decade of civil war. The conflict led to great destruction and a widespread displacement of people. Many civilians were abused, including those who were victims of amputations by rebel groups.

Conflict in Liberia increases number of Sierra Leonean refugees returning home

JENDEMA, Sierra Leone, Dec. 26 (UNHCR) - The intensifying conflict between anti-government rebels and regular Liberian army troops, and reports that Liberian soldiers were harassing refugees, prompted a sharp increase in the number of Sierra Leoneans returning home in recent weeks.
Small numbers of civilians from both Liberia and Sierra Leone are also fleeing the fighting in northern Lofa County and crossing into Sierra Leone, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

An estimated 1,300 Sierra Leoneans have
