Oxfam Emergencies Bulletin Jan 1998

Report
Oxfam
Sierra Leone is still in a state of political and military turmoil despite peace talks at the end of last year that are meant to lead to a hand- back of control from the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), the de facto military government, to the elected government of President Kabbah in April this year. A recent Oxfam assessment mission travelled through most parts of the country. It concluded that the eastern and southern areas of the country remain too unsafe to for us to start a programme there. These areas have long been the centre of insecurity

Nigeria says Sierra Leone Junta is building up forces

LAGOS, Dec 30 (Reuters) - Nigeria's army on Tuesday said Sierra Leone's military junta had started a major build up of forces and was unlikely to give up power in April as promised.

Ugbo said the Freetown junta, led by Major Johnny Paul Koroma, had begun training a new militia and showed little

Sierra Leone has been drained of every iota of human dignity. This is not an extremist position, it is the naked reality. The country is submerged in serious political crisis, it is on a keg of gun powder which requires just a little strike of match for full blown conflagration. The 7-year armed conflict has rendered millions of people as refugees and internally displaced people. It has entrenched hunger, ignorance and disease. 60 Sierra Leoneans Drown in Mano River

Tepitapia Sannah, PANA Correspondent
MONROVIA, Liberia (PANA) - At least 60 civilians fleeing renewed fighting in Eastern Sierra Leone are feared to have drowned in the Mano river on the border with Liberia, one witness said here Monday.

Moussa Fatorma, who said he survived the tradegy, told reporters the 60 persons, including women and children, drowned when their canoe capsized last Friday in the Mano river.

He said the cilivians were fleeing fierce fighting between forces of the Sierra Leonean junta and those of the civil defense force, the Kamajor hunter militia.
