The Solomon Islands Red Cross has so far reached thousands of people in an awareness campaign aimed at curbing the spread of dengue fever.

An outbreak of dengue was declared in the Solomons on 8 October last year, and so far the total number of suspected cases is almost 7,500, mostly concentrated in Honiara. One person is confirmed to have died from dengue and another death is suspected but unconfirmed.

· Solomon Islands: As of 1 January 2017, there have been 8,007 suspected cases (dengue serotype-2). There is a reduction in the weekly number of cases reported in December which is likely due to fewer sentinel sites reporting.

The Protection in the Pacific (ProPa) Network which include national government actors working for Ministries responsible for issues related to gender, human rights and protection from Fiji, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu, supported their national delegations to the twenty-second session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22).

The FINPAC project was funded by the Government of Finland and coordinated through the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

More than 80 Red Cross staff and volunteers from four Pacific countries have benefited from recent Emergency Shelter Kit trainings.

The trainings used both classroom and practical sessions to teach Red Cross responders from Tonga, Fiji, Tuvalu and the Solomon Islands how to combine local materials such as bush timber and palm tree leaves with the contents of shelter kits to construct strong, weather-proof shelters.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.8 occurred at 4.39 am on 9 December 2016 near 62km west-south-west of Kirakira in Makira Province, Solomon Islands. More than 40 aftershocks have followed and are still being experienced throughout parts of the Solomon Islands.
