EU Issues a Statement on the Killing of Members of the Justice and Equality Movement in Sudan

The EU Delegation in Sudan condemns the attack on 12 May 2013 that led to the killing of Mohamed Bashar, signatory to the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD), and several other members of the Justice and Equality Movement-Sudan.

The European Union supports the DDPD and remains committed to promote reconciliation and peace in Darfur. Attacking those who are willing to lay down arms and negotiate is detrimental to the peace process and to the people of Darfur.

EU pledges over €27 million to the people of Darfur

European Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs announced today €27.5 million to support people's access to basic services (such as education and health), as well as water management and agriculture in Darfur, a region in Western Sudan. The funding was announced by the European Union during the International Donors Conference for Darfur, which is being held in Doha (7 - 8 April).

The purpose of the visit was to be briefed about the security situation and the progress in the implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD). The delegation of the European Union was composed of Ambassadors from 6 European countries including Italy, United Kingdom, Spain, France, Netherlands, Sweden, and the European Union Ambassador to Sudan.

“ I welcome news of the agreement on oil revenue between Sudan and South Sudan. This will contribute to the economic viability of both countries and the welfare of their people.

The AU Roadmap, adopted by the AU Peace and Security Council on 24 April, was based on the concept of two viable states. Agreement on oil revenue is at the heart of this concept.

The European Union urges the Republic of Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan to redouble their efforts to resolve all outstanding issues in the post-secession negotiations in line with the principle of two viable states and to adopt a holistic approach to the search for peace.

In this context, the European Union welcomes the latest round of talks between Sudan and South Sudan in Addis Ababa under the aegis of the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) but is concerned that they failed to make more progress, particularly on issues related to the petroleum sector.

Brussels, 31 August 2011 - The European Commission has decided to replenish the African Peace Facility (APF) with €300 million to support African peace and security actions both at regional and continental levels. The funding will be available to the African Union and African Regional Organisations for the period 2011-2013 in order to support relevant, targeted, continental and regional initiatives in the area of conflict prevention, management and resolution, and peace building.

The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission Catherine Ashton met the Sudanese Foreign Minister, Ali Karti, yesterday afternoon in Brussels.

The High Representative said she was seriously concerned about the reports of what was happening in Southern Kordofan, particularly the impact on civilians. She called on the parties to conclude a Cessation of Hostilities agreement as quickly as possible and to allow full humanitarian access.
