White maize is the main staple grain consumed in Tanzania, Kenya, and Ethiopia. In Uganda, white maize is grown mainly as a commercial crop for export in the region. Imported rice is a major staple for Djibouti and Somalia, which mainly consume belem—the imported red rice. Tanzania is also a major producer and source of rice in the region while Kenya and Uganda are minor producers. Both red and white sorghum are produced and consumed in the region. This is an important staple in Sudan, Djibouti and Somalia as well as in other marginal agricultural areas of the region.

Following the launch in March 2013 of Open Data Platforms in 30 African countries, the African Development Bank (AfDB) has launched additional data platforms in the following 10 African countries: Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Gabon, Mali, Madagascar, Niger, Somalia, Sudan. This brings to forty (40) the number of African countries already connected to the Open Data network.

DRC, Sudan and Somalia continue to host the highest number of IDPs and persons severely affected by conflict. A new report provides in-depth analysis of the situation in 12 countries.

Across the East Africa region, consecutive good seasons transformed food security conditions from the initial low point in 2011, which was a great relief coming out of a severe drought. Around 6.5 million people were newly displaced, almost twice as many as the 3.5 million during 2011. The conflicts in Syria and DRC were responsible for around half of the new displacements.

• Face à l’arrivée de congolais au Burundi, l’UNHCR a ouvert deux nouveaux centres de transit (l’un à Cishemere en province de Cibitoke, et l’autre à Kajaga en Mairie de Bujumbura) et un nouveau camp de réfugiés (à Kavumu en province de Cankuzo). Le nouveau camp, ayant une capacité de 13 000 réfugiés, devrait en accueillir 5000 d’ici la fin 2013. Il sera inauguré le 15 mai 2013.
