WFP Operations and Resourcing Update Apr 2009

Foreword

Website seeks to reunite refugees

Report
AlertNet
Written by: Joanne Tomkinson

Imagine you've been uprooted suddenly by violence or a natural disaster - in the chaos of fleeing for safety, there's a chance you'll be separated from someone you love. For refugees who don't know the whereabouts of friends and family, tracking down people widely dispersed across countries and even continents is a very difficult business.

A new, free internet search engine proposes a refreshingly simple solution to the problem of reuniting families torn apart as they are forced from their homes by conflict or a disaster.

Success and challenges as UNHCR tackles neglected health issues

GENEVA, July 16 (UNHCR) - When António Guterres visited refugee camps soon after becoming UNHCR High Commissioner in 2005, he discovered what many staff on the ground already knew: in too many places the agency was not devoting sufficient resources to protect the health of refugees.

The result was "The High Commissioner's Special Project," a fund outside of the normal country budgets. It was established in 2007 to pay for programmes to improve health, nutrition and the response to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in refugee camps in 19 countries showing the greatest need.
