Acción Humanitaria para la Infancia 2013

A primera vista, Fatima aparentaba tener unos 4 o 5 meses. Pero, en realidad, acababa de cumplir su primer año de vida. Estaba entre los 126.000 niños con desnutrición aguda grave tratados en uno de los 425 centros nutricionales establecidos por el Ministerio de Salud de Chad en 2012 como parte de la expansión de la atención en todo el Sahel. Se llegó a cientos de miles de niños con la atención necesaria para salvar sus vidas. Tristemente, no se pudo llegar a otros muchos.

UNICEF has appealed for almost US$1.4 billion to meet the immediate, life-saving needs of children in 45 countries and regions gripped by conflict, natural disasters and other complex emergencies this year.

Sometimes soldiers take over a school entirely, but often they use just a part of the school or university and in doing so expose students to attacks and other violence.

The General Assembly today, acting on the recommendations of its Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary), adopted a peacekeeping budget of just more than $7 billion for the period 1 July 2012 to 30 June 2013.

The funding approved today — for 14 peacekeeping missions, the Logistics Base in Brindisi and the peacekeeping support account — is broken down as follows:

La Cinquième Commission, chargée des questions administratives et budgétaires, a recommandé à l’Assemblée générale d’approuver un budget d’un montant total de plus de 7 milliards de dollars pour le financement de 14 opérations de maintien de la paix des Nations Unies (OMP) et missions politiques spéciales, pour couvrir l’exercice budgétaire annuel allant du 1er juillet 2012 au 30 juin 2013.

People internally displaced by conflict and violence

For the last 14 years, the Norwegian Refugee Council’s Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre has monitored intern- al displacement resulting from conflict and violence across the world. In 2011, the number of people internally displaced by these causes stood at 26.4 million.

The Department of State and USAID have released a Joint Summary of Performance and Financial Information for FY 2011 [pdf]. The Summary describes the performance and accomplishments achieved by State and USAID toward the highest U.S. diplomatic and development objectives. The Summary provides information on both agencies’ financial and performance results with the goal of promoting greater accountability and transparency to Congress, the American public, and other key constituents.

Introduction

UNICEF’s Humanitarian Action for Children 2012 describes the daily situation of some of the world’s most vulnerable children and women in more than 25 countries and territories beset by emergencies and crisis.

GENEVA, 20 January 2012 (IRIN) - The governments of 15 countries most affected by internal displacement have failed to adequately protect internally displaced persons (IDPs), and in many cases have themselves been perpetrators of violence or abuses that led to the displacements, according to a Brookings-London School of Economics study.

“The key finding in this study is that the governments do not quite meet the benchmarks,” for adequate protection of IDPs, UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of IDPs Chaloka Beyani told IRIN.
