Sudan: Statement by Mr. John Holmes, the USG for Humanitarian Affairs and ERC

I am deeply troubled about the continuing threats and attacks against humanitarian agencies working in Darfur. Following two attacks against their teams and premises in just one week, Médecins Sans Frontières has announced it has no choice but to evacuate its team from two locations in North Darfur. The departure of MSF team leaves some 65,000 people without essential medical assistance.

I call on all concerned to ensure full respect for humanitarian principles and to allow aid organizations to work in peace. The armed opposition groups in Darfur have a clear obligation

Sudan: Darfur rebels unhappy at U.N. show of concern on ICC

By Opheera McDoom

KHARTOUM, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Darfur rebels on Friday criticized a U.N. Security Council resolution linking a U.N.-African Union peacekeeping force to African concerns at a move to indict Sudan's president for war crimes.

But the rebels said it was no victory for Khartoum and urged the world body to support the work of the International Criminal Court (ICC) which last month sought an arrest warrant for President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in the remote west.

"They should not have linked the

By Louis Charbonneau

UNITED NATIONS, July 31 (Reuters) - The U.N. Security Council renewed the mandate for peacekeepers in Darfur on Thursday in a resolution that Washington criticized for raising concerns about moves to indict Sudan's president for genocide.

Most Western powers accepted wording that makes clear the council would be willing to discuss freezing any International Criminal Court indictment of President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for genocide in the interest of peace in Darfur.

Report
AllAfrica
John Allen

Cape Town - An international coalition of activists on Thursday set out to name and shame governments around the world for their failure to provide even one of the additional helicopters needed for peacekeeping in Sudan's troubled Darfur region.

Last November, the commander of the joint African Union-United Nations peacekeeping force in Darfur (UNAMID), General Martin Agwai of Nigeria, told AllAfrica in an interview in Cape Town that the lack of roads in Darfur, especially during the rainy season, made helicopters essential for his peacekeeping mission.
