French troops secure Chad border with Sudan's troubled Darfur region

NDJAMENA, Aug 1 (AFP) - French troops began on Sunday to secure Chad's border with Sudan's troubled Darfur region as part of their mission to aid relief efforts to refugees.

"The troops are already in place in Abeche," said France's ambassdor to Chad, Jean Pierre Bercot.

French troops began on Saturday to fly relief supplies into the border town, located some 700 kilometers (430 miles) east of the capital Ndjamena.

Some 200 French troops "will patrol the entire length of the border in agreement with Chad's national army," Bercot told AFP.

Sudan says 30 days too short to disarm militia

Khartoum (dpa) - After a cabinet meeting Sunday, Sudans government condemned the 30-day deadline within which the U.N. says it must disarm the feared Janjaweed militia in Darfur.

"The Cabinet regards the period of 30 days given by the Security Council as not logical and difficult to implement,'' the Sudanese Foreign Minister Moustafa Osman Ismael told reporters after the meeting Sunday.

The resolution adopted Friday calls on Khartoum to disarm the Janjaweed militia within 30 days, and end what is now commonly called the world's worst humanitarian crisis, or face sanctions.
