CROP AND FOOD SUPPLY SITUATION

OVERVIEW

As of February 2004, the number of countries facing serious food shortages throughout the world stands at 38 with 24 in Africa, 7 in Asia, 5 in Latin America and 2 in Europe. In many of these countries, food shortages are being compounded by the effect of the HIV/AIDS pandemic on food production, marketing and transport: recently published joint FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment reports highlight this factor

Finland awards 25 million euros in humanitarian aid

Press Release 43/2004

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland has granted the sum of 25,180,000 euros for humanitarian aid.

Most of this amount, or 15.6 million euros, will be directed at countries in Africa. Finland supports the work of the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region, where some 2.4 million refugees are aid recipients. Through the United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP), Finland also supports the distribution of food aid to approximately six million people in those same
