9 April 2013 – The international community is losing vast amounts of agricultural production due to the effects of continuing land degradation such as desertification, a new United Nations study has warned, adding that without sustainable land management, development initiatives the world over will be stymied.

Passage du cyclone Dumile

Le ministre des Outre-mer, Victorin Lurel, adresse au nom du gouvernement un message de solidarité aux Réunionnaises et aux Réunionnais après le passage du cyclone Dumile aux abords de l’île de La Réunion ce jeudi.

Le ministre s’est tenu informé heure par heure de l’évolution de la situation par les autorités préfectorales. Il s’est entretenu jeudi soir avec des élus réunionnais qui lui ont communiqué des informations globalement rassurantes malgré la violence du phénomène.

Cyclone lashes Reunion

SAINT-DENIS-DE-LA-REUNION, France, Jan 03, 2013 (AFP) - Nearly 100,000 homes on Reunion were left without electricity on Thursday after a cyclone came close to scoring a direct hit on the French Indian Ocean island.

Winds of up to 180 kilometres per hour (110 miles per hour) and torrential rain caused extensive damage to the electricity network after cyclone Dumile passed within 90 kilometres of the island's west coast at around 0900 GMT.

France/La Réunion : dizaines de milliers de foyers sans électricité après un cyclone

SAINT-DENIS-DE-LA-REUNION (France), 03 jan 2013 (AFP) - Des dizaines de milliers de foyers étaient privés jeudi d'électricité après le passage du cyclone tropical Dumile à 90 km de la côté ouest de La Réunion, île française de l'Océan indien.

Les principaux dommages de Dumile concernaient le réseau électrique, des fils ayant été arrachés par le vent ou des branchages. Selon un bilan établi dans la matinée, 68.000 foyers étaient privés de courant, en majorité dans l'ouest et le sud de cette île française.

Zanzibar pushes to join island alliance to confront climate change

MIGOMBANI, Zanzibar (AlertNet) – The East African archipelago of Zanzibar is attempting to win “environmental independence” from Tanzania by joining an organisation that promotes the sustainable development of islands in the Indian Ocean.

Zanzibar has lodged a formal membership application with the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), a regional cooperation body whose current members are Comoros, Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar and Reunion.

Tsunami warnings relaxed after Indonesia quakes

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia, April 11, 2012 (AFP) - A tsunami watch around the Indian Ocean was lifted hours after two massive earthquakes struck off Indonesia's Sumatra island Wednesday, sending terrified people fleeing from the coast.

The 8.6-magnitude quake hit 431 kilometres (268 miles) off the city of Banda Aceh at 0838 GMT, and was followed by another undersea quake measured at 8.2, the US Geological Survey said.

Note: Tropical Cyclone Gula was located near 15.0S, 62.0E at 28/1200 UTC. Gula was located approximately 520 nm northeast of La Reunion moving westward at 4 knots with maximum sustained winds of 65 knots and gusts up to 80 knots. A second Tropical Cyclone Fame has made landfall in Madagascar and weaken.

Indian Ocean: Bracing for yet another cyclone

JOHANNESBURG, 26 February 2007 (IRIN) - Madagascar is bracing for yet another cyclone as "Gamede" it makes its way across the Indian Ocean. Gamede has already taken its toll in the neighbouring Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius and La Reunion claiming two lives and injuring nine respectively.

According to Gianluca Ferrera, deputy director of the UN's World Food Programme (WFP) in Madagascar, the authorities "are absolutely on alert and closely monitoring the direction it [Gamede]
