Al Mezan: 65th Anniversary of Palestinian Nakba calls for ending Palestinian catastrophe through justice, human rights, and democracy

Today marks the 65th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba: the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people in 1948, which left most Palestinians as refugees in and outside of Palestine. Since Israel occupied the rest of Palestine in 1967, its occupying forces have been violating the rights of the Palestinian civilian population under its control in breach of the rules of international law. Today presents an opportunity to reiterate the urgent call for ending Israel's occupation through reinstating justice, respecting human rights, and securing democracy for the Palestinian people.

Letter from Human Rights Organisations to the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process

6 April 2013

Four human rights organisations based in the Gaza Strip, along with the Palestinian NGO Network, have issued a letter to Mr Robert H. Serry, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, expressing concern at a number of recent statements he has made.

Al Dameer Association for Human Rights, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme, the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), and the Palestinian NGO Network issued the letter on 6 April 2013.

UN resolution on settlements: another missed opportunity to advance the rights of the Palestinian people

Al Mezan Opens Two Training Courses on “Enhancing Lawyers’, Capacity in Legal Framework and Supporting Human Rights”

On Sunday 17 February 2013, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights with support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP/PAPP) began two training courses on “Enhancing Lawyers’ Capacity in Legal Framework and Supporting Human Rights”, held at two training halls at the Laterna restaurant in Gaza City. Mrs. Mervat An-Nahhal, Al Mezan’s senior lawyer, opened the course by welcoming the 34 participating and trainee lawyers.

Child Killed and Three Injured by Unexploded Ordnance; Al Mezan Expresses its Sorrow and Calls for Adoption of Measures Ensuring Protection

Unexploded ordnance (UXO) continued to threaten life and safety of children in the Gaza Strip. In the last week, one child was killed and another three were injured, raising the number of persons killed to 12 including six children and the number of injured persons to 71 including 29 children in 42 separate incidents since the beginning of 2007.

On Wednesday 13 February 2013, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights with support from the United Nations Development Program/Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People (UNDP/PAPP) concluded two training courses on “Enhancing Lawyers’ Capacity in Legal Framework and Supporting Human Rights”, held at two training halls at the Laterna restaurant in Gaza City. Mr. Issam Younis, Al Mezan’s director, concluded the course by thanking the 47 participating and trainee lawyers for their interactive communication during the courses.

Factsheet on Women in Armed Conflict, 2012

This factsheet shows to what extent women in the Gaza Strip are affected by armed conflict between Palestinians and the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF). It also shows the historic development of women’s rights and the international community’s attempts to enhance women’s rights during armed conflict as well as in normal conditions. The factsheet shows the indirect consequences that women tolerate even when they are not the direct victims.

14 Israeli and Palestinian human rights organisations today warned of the far-reaching consequences of Israel’s refusal to fully cooperate with the United Nations (UN). On the morning of Israel’s second Universal Periodic Review (UPR), scheduled for Tuesday 29 January, it remains unclear whether it intends to participate.

This lack of transparency will not only mean that Israel avoids rigorous criticism of its violations of international law, but that the entire UPR system will be undermined by the loss of its two fundamental principles: equality and universality.

IOF Kills 168, Including 34 Children and 13 Women, and Damages 2,111 Houses during “Pillars of Cloud”

The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights has finished the first step of collecting information in its documentation project. Al Mezan’s field workers have conducted 294 field visits to places were Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) committed violations of International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law. Al Mezan’s field workers also carried out 3,083 documentary visits to collect information from victims and eyewitnesses. Based on Al Mezan’s main documentation, the IOF killed 168 including 34 children and 13 women and injured 1,046 others including 301 children and 105 women.

On the International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People, Al Mezan Calls on International Community to End Israeli Occupation

Thursday, 29 November 2012, marked the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. Sixty five years ago, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution 181, also known as the partition resolution, which recommended the portioning of historic Palestine into two states, one Arab and one Jewish. However, the Palestinian state remains nonexistent due to Israel’s denial of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination. This date stands for the international protest against the injustice inflicted uponthe Palestinian people.

A ceasefire has entered into force and attacks on Gaza have stopped since yesterday, 21 November 2012, night. IOF escalates its attacks on Gaza and target civilian government infrastructure, 145 Palestinians killed and 999 injured and tens of thousands displaced around Gaza

The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) continued its aggression on the Gaza Strip for the eighth straight day. Today, the IOF targeted more houses and launched massive attacks on government structures of a civilian character. This attack caused large damages to homes and other structures in Gaza city. Direct attacks on houses using the roof-knocking tactic claimed more lives, while IOF artillery intensified the shelling of neighborhoods and, in one attack, a hospital.

The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) attacked more civilians in Gaza today; including media workers. Contrary to the reports of an imminent ceasefire, IOF dropped leaflets instructing people to evacuate their homes in many areas around the Gaza Strip in anticipation of a ground invasion; including densely populated neighborhoods. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinian civilians are expected to evacuate under continuing bombardment. Thousands of people have preferred to remain in their houses instead of going to the few shelters, which have been provided by UNRWA in its schools.

IOF continue its violations in Gaza under international failure to stop it, 110 Palestinian killed and about 823 injured in Gaza on day 7 of the aggression

The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) continued its attacks on Gaza. While targeting civilian objects and persons, including houses and police stations, frequently deliberately, the IOF, stress that these targets have a military character. This practice has resulted in the vast majority of the victims of these attacks being civilians, for wide destruction of civilian property and infrastructure. These attacks represent grave breaches of the rules of international humanitarian law (IHL) and must be condemned and stopped immediately.

The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) aggression was seriously escalated in Gaza today, 18 November 2012. As more civilian objects are deliberately targeted by the IOF, greater numbers of civilians; especially children and women, are killed. The IOF has increased the use of roof-knocking tactic. Today, a house was attacked by a bomb that destroyed it completely on its residents, killing 9 people from the same family and two neighbours.
