Il se bouche le nez pour ne pas sentir la puanteur qui s’échappe d’une latrine qui déborde non loin de là. À Ramallah, capitale du Territoire palestinien occupé (300 000 habitants), une jeune fille de 14 ans est réveillée par des crampes menstruelles – elle n’ira pas en classe, car son école n’a pas de toilettes permettant l’intimité.

Sometimes soldiers take over a school entirely, but often they use just a part of the school or university and in doing so expose students to attacks and other violence.

Despite a four-day truce which was supposed to come into effect on Friday 26 October, fighting has continued to escalate in Damascus province, Aleppo, Idlib, Daara and Deir Ezzor in Syria manifested by a new wave of airstrikes by the Syrian forces and attacks by the rebels on strategic army checkpoints and air bases.

The report “Louder than words: An agenda for action to end state use of child soldiers” is published to mark the tenth anniversary year of the entry into force of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict. It examines the record of states in protecting children from use in hostilities by their own forces and by state-allied armed groups. It finds that, while governments’ commitment to ending child soldier use is high, the gap between commitment and practice remains wide.

Annual report: New results show UK aid is changing lives

New figures tracking the success of UK aid around the globe show how British support is transforming the lives of the world's poorest people.

The latest numbers are set out in the Department for International Development's Annual Report 2011-12, published by the British Government ministry today.

The progress report reveals the Government is on track to deliver the results it set out over a year ago, in a major review of how British aid is targeted.

Gaza, 17 April 2012 – As part of their continuing effort to combat poverty and hunger, representatives from India, Brazil and South Africa, UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRSC) signed an agreement in the amount of one million Dollars to rehabilitate the PRCS building in the Gaza Strip.
