India donates USD 1 million to UNRWA

For the second year running, India has donated USD 1 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. The money will go towards UNRWA’s General Fund, which supports cores services such as education for some half a million children across the Middle East. In some 700 schools, UNRWA teaches the curriculum of the host authorities (Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and the West Bank) as well as its own dedicated human rights programme.

The report “Louder than words: An agenda for action to end state use of child soldiers” is published to mark the tenth anniversary year of the entry into force of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict. It examines the record of states in protecting children from use in hostilities by their own forces and by state-allied armed groups. It finds that, while governments’ commitment to ending child soldier use is high, the gap between commitment and practice remains wide.

The new World Bank study says that about three-quarters of planet’s population now has access to a mobile phone.

The Governments of India, Brazil and South Africa (IBSA), through UNDP launch the rehabilitation phase of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society hospital in Gaza

Gaza, 17 April 2012 – As part of their continuing effort to combat poverty and hunger, representatives from India, Brazil and South Africa, UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRSC) signed an agreement in the amount of one million Dollars to rehabilitate the PRCS building in the Gaza Strip.
