New Arrivals Report: Beka’a (September-December 2012)

The average number of assisted families during the a/m period is 35% of the overall number of families reportedly arrived to DRC Bekaa operational area. Notably, DRC almost doubled its response capacity in December 2012 vis a vis the number of new arrivals due to the allocation of additional resources (human and logistics).

2012 – Overview

In 2012, 39 children were killed by Israeli air strikes on Gaza, 33 of which occurred during the Israeli offensive Operation Pillar of Defence, which started on 14 November 2012. During this offensive more than 400 children were injured, two were killed by Palestinian rockets falling short of their intended targets, and one child was killed whilst participating in hostilities.

Urban Refugees in Cairo

Executive Summary

Cairo, Egypt is home to one of the largest populations of urban refugees in the world. In recent decades, waves of refugees from Sudan, Iraq, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Palestine and elsewhere have fled to Cairo hoping to find third country resettlement, eventually return to their countries of origin, or start a new life by integrating into Egyptian society. For all of these refugees, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is the primary institution responsible for determining refugees’ status, offering protection, and facilitating durable solutions.

HIGHLIGHTS

● Israel began allowing limited amounts of gravel for commercial use into Gaza, while Egypt authorized the entry of construction materials for a range of Qatar-funded projects.

● Fewer olive trees vandalized by Israeli settlers in 2012 compared to 2011, however access and protection challenges during the olive harvest season remained.

● Multiple Area C projects were approved by the Israeli authorities since 2011, most of which benefit communities in Areas A and B.

This month saw a 9 percent increase in the number of children prosecuted in the Israeli military courts and imprisoned. This represents a 32 percent increase in the number of children held in military detention since December 2011. This month saw no change in the number of young children (12-15 years) being detained, which remained at 21 children.

Monthly Report: Referral of Patients from the Gaza Strip, December 2012

Summary

  • Patients interrogated: 37 patients (7 F; 30 M) who had applied for permits in December to cross Erez checkpoint were requested to appear for Israeli security interviews.

  • Patients delayed: 70 patients (27 F; 43 M) did not receive a response to their permit application and missed their hospital appointments.

  • Referrals to Jordan: Only one patient received financial coverage from the Ministry of Health for treatment in Jordanian hospitals.

Food Security Watch: West Bank and Gaza Strip - December 2012

KEY MESSAGES

  • The Food Security Sector was endorsed in the West Bank on 4 November 2012. Endorsement in the Gaza Strip will be sought in the coming week. It integrates Agriculture, Food, and Cash for Work Sectors and oversees humanitarian & development policies and programs in both WB & GS. This initial Food Security Watch is a product of the three Food Security lead agencies, but will become a sector product in 2013.

Depuis 1997, ECHO finance des opérations de secours destinées aux Palestiniens vulnérables qui ne sont pas pris en charge par le système.

- Overall, 1,117 truckloads (33,381 tons) were entered to Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing.
- The Kerem Shalom crossing and the Erez terminal fully operated this past week.

Israel and Egypt facilitate the transfer of construction materials to the Gaza Strip

Following five and a half years in which the entrance of construction materials to the Gaza Strip has been heavily restricted, in the past few days, both Israel and Egypt have facilitated transfers of materials via Kerem Shalom and Rafah crossings, respectively, perhaps pointing to a change in policy. Yesterday, Israel allowed 20 truckloads of gravel destined for the private sector to enter Gaza; this coming one day after Egypt allowed construction materials to enter Gaza via Rafah Crossing.
