Red Crescent continues sending aid to Gaza Strip

The Egyptian Red Crescent - under Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak - continues sending humanitarian aid and monitoring the access of foreign aid convoys to the Gaza Strip, Red Crescent Secretary General Mamdouh Gabr said Thursday 31/12/2009.

Israel's Netanyahu proposes Egypt peace summit - officials

JERUSALEM, Dec 31 (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proposed an Egyptian-hosted summit with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as a possible way to resume stalled peace talks, Israeli officials said on Thursday.

The offer was the latest sign that progress was being made towards renewing U.S.-backed negotiations frozen for a year.

Palestinian and Egyptian officials had no immediate comment on the plan, which two Israeli officials said Netanyahu raised on Tuesday at talks in Cairo with Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak.

General overview

6.6 million internally displaced persons (IDPs)(1) and eight million refugees(2) hosted by countries in the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia (MENACA) region. Population were uprooted as a result of political instability and violence. Although some returns have been recorded over the past year, these were either limited or unsustainable, owing to the still fragile security context in the areas of origin. Increased humanitarian aid to Gaza after IDF operation, 31 Dec 2009

COGAT - Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories, Ministry of DefenseSince the end of the IDF operation in Gaza (18 Jan 2009), 703,224 tons of aid and 105,600,128 liters of fuel have been delivered to the Gaza Strip.

At the Cabinet meeting of 22 March 2009, the Government of Israel instructed the bodies dealing with the matter, to enable the entry - without restriction - of foodstuffs to the residents of Gaza from all relevant sources, after it has been verified that they are indeed foodstuffs, and this in the framework of the humanitarian efforts.

Quarterly Regional Humanitarian Funding Update, Oct - Dec 2009

Main Findings:

Humanitarian requirements in the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia (MENACA) region in 2009 were funded at 67.7 percent, with US$122 million in the pipeline. The Syria Drought Response Plan 2009 is by far the least funded among the MENACA appeals with only 13.9 percent of the requirements met.

During 2009, the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) provided $36.7 million to countries in the MENACA region out of more than $397 million allocated worldwide.

Pledges and contributions to CERF for 2010 has reached $424 million.

OPT: Water Project Improves the PA's Capacity to Deliver Services in the Town of Tarqumia

The town of Tarqumia is feeling the positive impact of a new water system which was recently completed under the Infrastructure Needs Program (INP) funded by USAID. The project, serving the Hebron Governorate in the West Bank , is enhancing the Palestinian Authority's capacity to offer decent living conditions to the town's residents.

15,500 residents of Tarqumia are now enjoying a continuous flow of fresh water. The residents include more than 8,000 women, who are witnessing improvement in their quality of life due to the certainty of water supply.

Emergency Aid Reaches Gaza

The recent war on Gaza caused great suffering among the 1.5 Palestinians who live there. The UN estimated that at one point during the war 500,000 people were displaced from their homes. Some 4,000 dwellings were destroyed, forcing homeless families with nowhere else to go to live in tents.

Overview

2009 opened to the largest Israeli military operations in Gaza since 1967. By the time unilateral ceasefires were declared on 18 January, "Cast Lead" had killed over 1,400 Gazans, including at least 350 children, and injured thousands more. Some 280 schools, almost half of all health facilities, and critical water and sanitation infrastructure, were damaged or destroyed. Over 3,500 homes were obliterated and around 50,000 sustained minor to major damages.
