OPT: Sharon's unilateral steps

by Joel Beinin
As the Israeli army reimposed a nearly complete lockdown on the West Bank in the aftermath of the Christmas Day 2003 suicide bombing outside of Tel Aviv, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has reportedly deputized a top general to draw up the "separation plan" he threatened seven days earlier at the annual Herzliya conference on security issues. As widely predicted in the pre-performance publicity, at Herzliya Sharon announced that Israel would take unilateral measures to "disengage" itself from the Palestinians if Palestinian Authority

By Matthew Tostevin

JERUSALEM, Dec 30 (Reuters) - Israel, under international pressure over a giant separation barrier being built in the West Bank, plans minor changes to the route it says will make life easier for Palestinians, security sources said on Tuesday.

Israel says completed sections of the obstacle of razor wire and concrete are already stopping suicide bombers. Palestinians say the barrier annexes land occupied since the 1967 war and will deprive them of a viable, independent state.

The changes will entail widening the

2003: In a dangerous world, a few glimmers of hope

2003: In a dangerous world, a few glimmers of hope
The war in Iraq and attacks on humanitarian workers, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan, mark 2003 as another year of violent conflict. Yet in countries peripheral to the war on terrorism 2003 was actually a year of hopeful developments, notably in Africa. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Liberia, Angola, and Sudan, where conflicts of long duration have displaced 11.3 million people, all made progress towards peace in 2003. While the peaceful developments are fragile,

Jordan to close refugee camp at Iraqi border

Amman (dpa) - Jordan has rejected a U.N. call for the extension of a refugee camp hosting roughly 500 people, mostly Palestinians who fled the war in Iraq, official sources said Wednesday.

They added the interior ministry had plans to evacuate the camp, near the borders with Iraq, following the departure of nearly 400 Palestinians bearing Iraqi, Egyptian or Lebanese travel documents.

The camp - erected early this year in preparation for a possible influx of war refugees - is also hosting 90 Sudanese and Somali nationals.
