Key issues

  • An Israeli settler was stabbed and killed by a Palestinian, triggering a wave of violence, resulting in the injury of 43 Palestinians (by settlers and Israeli forces) and eight settlers (by Palestinians), as well as significant property damage. Israeli forces arrest dozens of settlers blocking Palestinian traffic near Nablus.

  • One civilian was killed and three others injured in UXOs and tunnel-related incidents in the Gaza Strip.

● A Palestinian was killed in Hebron and another died of wounds he sustained in a demonstration in late February, bringing the total number of Palestinian fatalities in conflict-related incidents in the West Bank since the beginning of the year to seven.

● The week saw a significant decline in West Bank injuries (36 compared to a weekly average of 240 injuries over the past weeks)

● Four children died in Gaza; three died in an accident related to the electricity shortage, and one due to misuse of a weapon.

Syrian Arab Republic: Armed conflict is causing large scale displacement and severely affecting people's safety and livelihoods.

Libya: Residual humanitarian needs mainly relate to internal displacement. The most vulnerable are those living in IDP settlements and camps, which are located in Tripoli, Benghazi and in the surrounds of Sirte, Misrata, Tarhouna and Dirj.

Iraq: Insecurity and protracted displacement continues to create significant humanitarian needs for many Iraqis.

Japan’s New Financial Assistance to the PA through the World Bank’s Trust Fund

  1. The Government of Japan has decided to extend a contribution of 10 million USD to the Palestinian Recovery and Development Plan Multi-Donor Trust Fund (PRDP-MDTF) to support the Palestinian Authority (PA) direct budget Administrative Arrangement to this effect was exchanged today on March 4th, 2013, in Ramallah with the participation of H.E. Dr. Salam Fayyad, Prime Minister of the PA, between Ms. Mariam Sherman, Country Director, The World Bank, West Bank and Gaza Country Office and Mr. Junya Matsuura, Ambassador for Palestinian Affairs/ Representative of Japan to PA.
