Gaza's only fresh water source is now too dangerous to drink and is contaminated with fertiliser and human waste, according to a shocking new report from Save the Children and Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP).

On the fifth anniversary of the blockade, Gaza's Children: Falling Behind, reveals desperate families are being forced to buy from private sources, not knowing that in most cases this water too is contaminated, often at ten times the safe level.

Aid Worker Security Report 2011 - Spotlight on security for national aid workers: Issues and perspectives

Key findings

  • The past two years show a downturn in violence against aid workers that spiked in a small number of conflict contexts beginning in 2006 and peaking in 2008.

  • The recent decline in attacks is mainly due to the shrinking presence of international aid agencies in the most violent settings, Somalia in particular, rather than improving security conditions.

  • The incidence of aid worker kidnappings continues to rise dramatically, and the use of major explosives has emerged as a tactic of violence in a small number of settings.

Psychosocial Assessment of Education in Gaza and Recommendations for Response

Executive Summary

Between December 27th, 2008 and January 18th, 2009, the Israeli army waged a major military operation in the Gaza Strip, bombarding the territory from the air, ground and sea, and conducting a large scale ground incursion. 'Operation Cast Lead' resulted in significant loss of life and damage to infrastructure. Moreover, military operations continue on a regular basis, notably in the areas near the border with Israel (the so-called buffer zone), resulting in death, injury and displacement. These operations occur against the backdrop of a severe, long-term blockade.

Israel: UN set to quiz government on violations of right to housing and water

8 July 2010 - Israel was today accused of serious human rights violations in the area of housing and access to water - including war crimes.

The accusations came as Israel prepares to be examined by the UN Human Rights Committee, a body that scrutinizes government's compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The Committee will be quizzing Israel at a hearing in Geneva on 13-14 July.

The claims are contained in a report filed with the UN Committee by two independent human rights organizations

DCI-Palestine submits supplementary report to the UN Human Rights Committee

[Ramallah, 2 June 2010] - On 1 June 2010, DCI-Palestine submitted a Supplementary Report to the UN Human Rights Committee which will soon review Israel's Third Periodic Report relating to its compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (1966) (ICCPR).

One Year After - Gaza Early Recovery and Reconstruction Needs Assessment

The report estimates that a further $527 million needs to be spent to repair all the damage caused by Israeli attacks between December 2008 and January 2009. In spite of the remaining destruction and Israel's refusal to allow the importation of building materials, a large amount of small scale repairs have been carried out, effecting one-quarter of the total damage. $151 million of assistance has been given to Gaza in the form of employment generation projects, food aid and other projects.
