Summary

The present report is submitted pursuant to resolution 19/17 in which the Human Rights Council decided to establish an independent international fact-finding mission to investigate the implications of the Israeli settlements on the human rights of the Palestinian people throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.

Chapter I

Introduction

1 . The Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People was established by the General Assembly by its resolution 3376 (XXX) of 10 November 1975, with the task of recommending a programme designed to enable the Palestinian people to exercise its inalienable rights, as recognized by the Assembly in its resolution 3236 (XXIX) of 22 November 1974.

Summary

The present report has been prepared by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, pursuant to General Assembly resolution 66/78, in which the Assembly requested the Secretary-General to report to the Assembly at its sixty-seventh session on the implementation of the resolution. The period covered by the report is 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2012.

The construction of Israeli settlements in occupied Arab territories and its impact on the human rights of the residents are addressed in the report.

Summary

The present report addresses Israel’s compliance with its obligations under international law in relation to its occupation of Palestinian territory. The Special Rapporteur focuses particular attention on the legal responsibility of business enterprises, corporations and non-State actors involved in activities relating to Israel’s settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory.

Conditions worsening for Palestinian people, UNCTAD report warns

UNCTAD's annual report on Assistance to the Palestinian People released today warned that long-term prospects for economic development in the occupied Palestinian territory have worsened.

The report points to the continuing economic blockade of Gaza, and the increase in the number of mobility barriers to Palestinian people and goods in the West Bank, as well as the decline in donor support which will have serious socio-economic ramifications for the population.
