Bruxelles, le 8 Novembre 2012 - Suite à l'évaluation des besoins effectuée par les experts humanitaires de la Commission européenne sur le terrain, la Commission a alloué € 6.000.000, prenant effet immédiatement, afin de fournir une assistance aux victimes de l'ouragan Sandy qui a frappé les Caraïbes la semaine dernière.

"L'ouragan Sandy illustre l'intensité croissante des catastrophes naturelles auxquelles même les pays les mieux préparés comme les Etats-Unis, ne sont pas à l'abri", a déclaré Mme Kristalina Georgieva, commissaire de l'aide humanitaire.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Aug 23, 2012 (AFP) - Tropical Storm gained power Friday as it roared toward Haiti with rains and high winds that could wreak havoc for people still living in makeshift shelters after a devastating 2010 earthquake.

Rains had already begun lashing southern Haiti, and US forecasters said the storm could be near hurricane strength later Friday when it smacks the southern coast of Hispaniola, the island Haiti shares with the Dominican Republic.

Technology and preparedness save lives and protect livelihoods. The recent earthquake off Indonesia provided a shining example. The Indian Ocean Tsunami Early Warning System, coordinated through the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Commission(UNESCO-IOC), worked as it was designed following an 8.6 magnitude earthquake off northern Indonesia. Largely due to education programs, Indonesians living in coastal communities were able to mobilize and safely move to higher ground.
